Chris Barnes

I think our silence on the subject speaks volumes. Actually, for some I think there is disappointment. With so few on-air opportunities within a 100 mile radius of NEPA, I suspect that some here had hoped for someone or something above the rest. Something to make us say WOW. I don't know if WOW is what we geeks are experiencing listening to WQFM in the morning or any time. It's not YECHH but it ain't WOW either.

Barnes is a stage/TV entertainer, and he comes with solid credentials. However, being an entertainer doesn't necessarily make you an air personality, and the flip of that is equally as true. I've known lots of jocks who were smooth as silk, and funny as hell, on the radio, but put them before an audience (big or small)with a mic in hand and it could often be quite embarrassing. In fact, I knew more than a few guys who referred to themselves as "inside" jocks; they loved the comfort of a studio, but positively dreaded/hated doing remotes, appearances, etc.

What were your thoughts on Soupy Sales when he was on WNBC? I thought he transferred to radio again well but other friends of mine did not.

I honestly never heard enough of Soupy to form an honest opinion. What are we talking here, 1979-1983, somewhere in there? WNBC went through a lot of changes during those years, including pairing Scotty Brink, a well-credentialed major market jock, with Richard Belzer, stand-up comedian, and now a successful dramatic TV actor(L&O SVU). Brink, for radio trivia fans, was from Williamsport, worked for WWPA back in the early 60s, and from there hit many majors - his is a voice you'd know, you've heard it a thousand times on national spots, both TV and radio.

circa 1978 to 1982 or thereabouts.

W-ENNNNNNN-B-C! How 'bout those days? WABC and WNBC doing serious battle for #1. And by the mid-80s, both were toppled and little more than an afterthought to the market's listeners. Really hard to believe. Left even further behind, WNEW and WMCA. WNBC had Imus on AM drive, Stern on PM drive. Despite his enormous and undeniable success, Stern, IMO, was just a guy whose PD let him work blue.

I saw an ad in Electric City that says Chris Barnes is on mornings on Q 92. What's up with that?

he's a doobee hack. He couldn't make it in Hollywood, so he's back. He brags on the air how Steve Carell and Jeremy Piven were his understudies in Chicago, but they won emmys and he's in NEPA. Get a life, Chris.

Hey, all I know is he was on a network TV show while I'm still trying to get on freaking PCN!!!!!! Take it easy on him. It's uncalled for, doobee or no.

Yonk,

Soupy turned 80 this year and is in bad health. I met him at a collectors show in LA a few years ago when his book first came out and the poor man could hardly walk. He fell from a stage and was hurt very bad and was never albe to recover from it 100%. He now has other health issues.

"He stinks. Period. He plugs his future in-laws businesses, that's about it."

Spoken like a true whiny malcontent. What happened, you applied for the job? And how do you know who his future in-laws are? Do you work there or something?

I think if we did a "who's the in-laws" survey of all those who've left comments here, it'd be about 50 percent know, 50 percent don't. Regardless of how widely known that information is, the comments do sound like someone whose ox was gored somewhere along the way and they sound oddly familiar. I might not bet the whole ranch on my guess as to the identity of sweetdee18510, but I'd put a few bucks on it.

Do I think he has talent? Abundantly. Does he fit your idea of what a morning DJ should sound like? Obviously not. Talent and your preconceived ideas don't automatically have to go together however.

If you don't like him, that's fine. "I don't like him" would suffice for most people. You sound like there may be other issues and if so those issues are of no concern, care, or weight to anyone here. Whine on.

Yes, I think I will "whine on"
My only issues are he's annoying and he's a name-dropper. You like him? Good for you. That just means you are not annoyed during drive time. ;D

IF MY MEMORY SERVES ME CORRECT. HE WAS ENGAGED A COUPLE OF TIMES IN HIS STAUNT IN L. A.! NO MARRIAGE THOUGH! HMMMM!
NOW A PRIEST (FR SICA) INTRODUCES HIM TO HIS FIANCE. HE WORKED WITH FR SICA AT CAMP ST ANDREW. GUESS WHO ELSE WORKED THERE. OUR LOVELY MAYOR! [EDIT] IF THE WEDDING GOES THRU, I FOR ONE WILL BE SURPRISED! BUT IM SURE HE'LL BE COMPINSATED FOR HIS TROUBLES! NIKE A COMEDY (OR THERE LACK OF) CLUB ON LACKAWANNA AVE. IF YOU HAVE TO COME BACK TO THIS AREA TO MAKE A LIVING, THEN GUESS WHAT! YOU NEVER MADE IT!
