Chris Daughtry's (from American Idol) "It's Not Over"

Here is how Chris Daughtry's new hit is doing in these multiple formats:

Top 15 Pop (stations like Boston's Kiss 108) - not a surprise, since it's the most likely place for the former "AI" contestants (Kelly Clarkson easily being the biggest success; eclipsing all other "AI" talent combined)

Top 10 Alternative Pop (or Hot AC, or Grunge Lite; stations like Mix 98-5) - again, no surprise, since it appeals to the same type of audience who like Kelly Clarkson

Made the Grunge (Alternative) Chart (i.e., stations like WBCN and WFNX) - definitely a small surprise, but not as big as....

Top 20 Heavy Metal (the non-PC name for Active Rock, which just happens to be heavy metal kingpin WAAF's format) - a huge surprise, given that rock and "AI" mix like oil and water. At least WAAF had the sense not to add Daughtry - yet!

Top 20 Mainstream Rock (i.e. stations like 94 'HJY) - see above description for heavy metal. 'HJY, WHEB-FM and Rock 101 (WGIR-FM) have likewise not added Daughtry quite yet.

What's your reactions about anyone in "American Idol" making numerous rock charts? ???

To me, alternative rock and grunge rock are one and the same. IMHO, if alt-rock doesn't even touch the artists which gave birth to the format (i.e. B-52's, The Police, Talking Heads, Pretenders, Blondie, U2, Duran Duran), then it's not worth listening to. I've since gone over to racist talk disguised as sports (WEEI) and actual racist talk (WRKO) which the PC Red Sox and their PC single largest owner Pinch Sulzberger (Boston Globe, New York Times) is trying to clean up, to the dissatisfaction of many (including myself).

Remember when Z100 in New York tried to merge alt-rock into top 40, saying that it's one and the same? They got their butts handed to them by WKTU in '96, which - instead of forcing Z100 to change its attitude - led to sore loser Chancellor (Z100) buying the entireity of Evergreen Media ('KTU). Last I heard, Z100 was trying to be New York's de facto contemporary rock station as a CHR. :(

BTW, John Ivey (KIIS LA) is (or was) a huge fan of merging rock and CHR as one format; Kiss 108 was playing all of these grunge groups (Green Day, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, Pearl Jam) a good year to year and a half before WBCN (terrified of having its 25-54s adversely affected by grunge) even touched the stuff.

I will say this: at least rock stations in eastern New England are using what's left of their brains in refusing to go along with corporate (for the time being) and play Chris Daughtry, who's as much a rocker as Led Zeppelin was disco (Uncle Dale Dorman's "Great disco tune" quote from Memorial Day 1981 at Kiss 108 still stands out in my mind). ;D

It doesn't sound like you've listened to a real alternative station in years. Most of them do pay tribute to their heritage and play new stuff that is far from grunge. The hottest single right now is from Modest Mouse, which may be from the northwest, but definitly not grunge.
