Chris Edwards "Solid Gold Time Machine"

I just added a terrific 90-minute aircheck to the radio museum website, starring Chris Edwards doing the K-101 Solid Gold Time Machine oldies show back in August 1986:

http://www.sfradiomuseum.com/audio/kioi/

Scroll down to "1986" to hear it.

This recording shows what a terrific jock Chris Edwards was -- upbeat, great sense of humor, terrific with callers and with his sidekick, Bouncin' Bev.

At this time, K-101 was six years past its James Gabbert era, and was currently under the ownership of Price Communications. A year after this broadcast, KIOI would become the property of Fairmont Communications.

I do have a question, though: Chrissie mentions K-101's then-morning man, Don Gerrard (Gerard?), of whom I remember nothing. Does anybody remember Gerrard's run at the station?

I don't remember Gerard at all. But I remember finding K-101 pretty boring during that period (Chris Edwards excepted), so I probably wasn't listening much.

I'm thinking Gerard could have held the morning slot only briefly between Dr. Don Rose and Terry McGovern (?)

I loved the Chris Edwards Time Machine. I bet he sounds as good now as he did then. Any chance of bringing him back to the area? By the way, does anyone know what station he is with and the format so we can listen to him again? I think Kenny in Concord might know? Miss those oldies!

I have no idea where he is ,, The KIOI Time Machine was great Sunday night entertainment in the 80s! I remember Chris Edwards ( the 1968 KYA DJ) playing with the KYA Radio Oneders @ Ygnacio Valley High 40 years ago this month Nov 1968,,Also with him was Johnny Holliday @ the game in Concord! I used to go by the KYA1260 studios and make requests from the parking lot, when KYA1260 was located at the "Bottom of the mark" Hopkins that is ,, In 1972, i rememember Chris doing my request Conquistador , by Procul Harem. Chris edwards will never forget me Hounding him to play Double Barrel by Dave and Ansil Collins, never played it, Brian Thomas said it didnt test well! I would hope to hear Chris Edwards on Gary Moras KYA1260 stream! I would hope to hear John mack Flanagan, Bobby Ocean, Steve Garland, Candi Chamberlain, Steve Jordan, Celeste Perry, and Sylvia Chacon on garys station one more time before Im on Social Security! One last DJ would be J. Parker Antrim, what a music buff, theres nothing this guy doesent know! And last but not least Paula Kelly ,,Kenny in Concord

Oh...my...gosh, that gave me a chill just now. The date was 1972 and I was very young and I was going to be hot stuff, going to parties with fancy clothes and bedding the cuties...man how the thought of a song, not even the song itself, can bring memories flooding back.

Come to think of it, I indeed was hot stuff and did bed the cuties...and I often played a tape with Conquistador and some David Bowie and some Led Zeppelin and...and...

Dang! I wonder if I can work out an arrangement of that for my accordion...

Last I read, unless things have changed since this article was published, Chris Edwards was
doing sales at KKSF. At one time, he was also managing KABL 960 before the KKGN switchover:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/08/27/PKGDOIM40O1.DTL&type=tvradio

Chris on KYA was one of my childhood inspirations while I was growing up in Vallejo,
along with Dave Diamond, Dr. Don Rose and, in my early radio career, J. Parker Antrim...

Chris' boss-radio energy would be a refreshing revival to the otherwise staid sounds of
San Francisco radio...

I'm trying to imagine a Polka arrangement of Conquistador. I bet you never used your accordion to attract the cuties, though...

Nope, nope, nope. After KABL, Chris Edwards went briefly to the transplanted KTRB/860, then headed over to Classic Hits KFRC as one of their primary sales execs. According to a well-placed source at CBS/SF, he is still a key member of the local radio cluster's sales force although KFRC has regretfully passed.

Heres a voice from the past J PARKER ANTRIM

NICE TO HEAR THE LATEST ABOUT CHRIS...HE WAS AN AE AT KING BROADCASTING'S KSFO/KYA-FM WHILE MY WIFE DID TRAFFIC THERE (LOGS, NOT CARS). HE HAD A KIDNEY TRANSPLANT DURING THAT TIME. WE WERE CLOSE, EVEN GOING OUT TO HIS HOUSE ONCE FOR A PARTY.

HE CALLED US WHEN HE WAS IN VEGAS A FEW YEARS BACK AND WE TRIED TO GET TOGETHER BUT OUR SCHEDULES DIDN'T PERMIT IT.

HE IS ONE OF THOSE SMART EX-DJ'S WHO KNEW WHEN TO GO INTO SALES.

JERRY GORDON KNUU LAS VEGAS

He's selling at CBS, primarily KCBS now...but if anyone had a station and wanted to let him do the time machine he'd be there in a N.Y. second!

...Then I guess I'll be talking to Chris when he gets back from New York!

Chris Edwards in sales at KCBS?? I doubt it! I'm sure he's on the air somewhere. You might want to check the Fresno area, last I heard he was loud and clear and doing well.

NOT the same Chris Edwards...he's been in the Bakersfield area for nearly
40 years, and has a deeper voice than the SFO Chris Edwards. Both are
solid pros; I met the Bakersfield one at 101.5 KGFM a few years back...

Then there's the Verne White guy who has also used the Chris Edwards moniker for his online Oldies stream. I don't know if either of the other two (SF or Fresno) was really born with the name, but it seems to be one of those names that made the rounds in various markets in the 60s and 70s. "Mark Elliot" was another - still used professionally by the Disney voice-over guy and former KHJ/KFRC jock. But back then you would hear Mark Elliots here and there around the country.

Thanks, Kenny. I'll contact you off-board to make arrangements to pick them up.

Anybody got an 8-track machine to donate to the museum so we can dub 'em down?

By the way, Super Harlow played "Conquistador" as a long-distance dedication for you on Classic KYA last night around 10:45...

So Steve Jordan was the original "Time Machine" and Chris Edwards was an imposter? So there's 3 Chris Edwards and one Steve Jordan, if Chris Edwards is still around, he's a living legend. Kenny in Concord must have been stalking the wrong Chris Edwards? Why is this so complicated?

What? There were several hosts of the Time Machine on K-101 (and later on KYA) over the decade-and-a-half that it was on the air. I think Gary Taylor and Cliff Saunders also hosted it. There were no imposters.
