Chris Kroc

I am guess I am surprised nobody has commented on the story on page one about Chris Kroc moving to Dallas to do PM drive at KLIF in Bid D. I figured all the professional haters on the board would have had something to say...

I worked with Jon-David Wells back in the early 80s. It was apparent to me then he is a very, very intellegent man. To see the true colors and talent between the two, I'd love to see Kroc try to debate with Jon David on any topic Kroc chooses. Kroc would be out of his league and it would be a blood bath. Jon-David Wells is a much, much better host and trusted name than Chris Kroc could ever hope to be. Let's see what this change will do for KLIF ratings.

You may be correct on the first part, but, talk radio is not an intellectual debate. It's mostly about other things like story-telling, topic selection, energy, pacing and so on. Raw intelligence does not necessarily help you be a great showman. I heard Wells on KLIF and Kroc a few times when he was on WSB and I think Kroc had a better and more interesting show. Hopefully he can bring some new blood to KLIF.

This pretty much sums ups talk radio today. Wells IS a master but Kroc engaged everyday folks to join him in all sorts of LOCAL protests and he got lots of free publicity to boot. He spoke and people responded. Like him or not, he did what they asked him to. Macon isn't/wasn't ready for his style and that's OK. A dial full of choices is a good thing since the marketplace usually decides who stays and who goes. Cumulus could have used a satellite morning show and that would been one less local program in the market. Who wants that anyway?

Jon-David was also one hell of a jock and a nice guy too. Enjoyed him on 94Q the last couple of years it was on.

Don't be surprised if that's what you get, Daryll. There's no question in my mind that Krok was brought in to WMAC with the sole purpose of making him a "company man" and then moving him to one of their (few) big-market talk stations. For whatever reason, Jon-David was not the guy that the suits wanted at KLIF, and maybe Krok is... so there he goes.

Chris is a good guy -- a little wound-up, but a good guy -- and I hope he does well in Big D. But if he has a market manager and PD who won't let him do what he does best, he has no chance.

K-L-I-F... eleven - ninety (oops, sorry, not anymore) -- Heritage call letters, owned by a company that's sucking - no, make that ALREADY sucked -- the life out of radio.

TDO - Lovin' the life of independent broadcasting!!!

Once a Kroc...always a Kroc.

KLIF is a perennial 1 or 2 share station. It makes money hand over fist, but only because it has a stellar sales department.

But as far as his talk show goes, he'll be flying completely under the radar.
