Where is Chris Miller on The River? I thought he was going to start in the afternoons this week???

97.1 has finally dropped the WFOX callsign and has changed it to WSRV.
Edited by 96atl on 04/19/06 03:55 AM.

97.1 callsign change

WFOX calls are now on Cox sister classic rock "95.9 Fox" in Norwalk, CT, formerly WEFX.

This might have been done to seperate the station from it's former "Fox 97" past. Usually, Cox keeps the current callsign when a format change occurs. But since everyone is trying to compare "The River" to Fox 97, Cox probably decided that the last traces of it's past needed to be changed.

The WFOX callsign has been on 97.1 for at least 25 years or more and 5 different formats (top 40, AC, oldies, urban, clasic hits). I wonder why they waited four and a half months after the station launch to change it.

The same reason it was the "new" 95-5 The Beat for over half a decade. Cox doesn't like change.
Edited by FMFreq on 04/19/06 02:22 PM.

Re: 97.1 callsign change

Why do you think Cox isn't giving up to Fox-TV (for a price). It would be perfect for WNYW. History be damned!

Precisely. Put the calls up there where the Fox suits are as a constant reminder of what they don't have. (Better than leaving them up the river with no exposure.)

It's location. Some things are just TOO convenient. :)

A TV station can have the same call letters as a radio station under separate ownership. Look at WSTR-TV in Cincinnati. But I don't know the rules regarding whether Cox would have to agree and be compensated.

If they own the calls, they own the calls, and have to allow them (one way or another) to take them with the -tv suffix.

Its much easier to just give them the full calls.

TV, FM, and AM are under different assignments by the FCC. I'm sure there's already a WFOX in TV and AM assigned, even a KFOX in all three as well.

Re: 97.1 callsign change

Cox owns KFOX/14 in El Paso,TX, while HK Media owns KFOX/1650 in Torrance, CA. Go to www.kfox.com and you get a station owned by CC, but it is actually KUFX. I don't think there is a KFOX-FM. Ditto for WFOX on the TV or AM bands.

Re: 97.1 callsign change

Correct, there are no WFOX (AM) or WFOX-TV. Cox owns the WFOX calls, regardless of what's put after them. Cox is the one to allow people to use them, as they're considered a "brand" of the Cox Enterprises, not the FCC, as the WFOX calls aren't available...even for TV.

Re: 97.1 callsign change

Who would own WSTR? Sinclair or Lincoln Financial? Same thing for WALR. I assume there would be some sort of agreement to share the same calls among different owners.

Whoever had the calls first I beleive, in this case, WSTR-TV had the calls on 9/15/90, and WSTR had the calls on 2/13/90.

Now, if a company has to divest a station (IE, JP had both WSTR and WSTR-TV in 1990), I don't know who would "own" the calls. It would probably be in the sale agreement who would own what.

You know, this thread is hilarious!

The first thing mentioned was about Chris Miller and the second was about the call letters!!

Then, the entire thing slide into a call letter thread and nothing else was ever mentioned about Chris Miller.

The things you believe to be important in ATL radio. WOW! You crack me up.
