Christian Group Demands ESPN Anchor Fired after Off-Air Remark

If I'm not mistaken, she started babbling negatively about Notre Dame's football program (inappropriate for an ESPN anchor), which drunkenly segued to nasty things said about the religion in general by way of "touchdown Jesus" (also inappropriate for an ESPN anchor). Substitute "Mohammed" for "Jesus" in her remarks and she now would be living like Salman Rushdie. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Should TV anchors be held responsible for things that they say off-air (but in public)? Makes for a good debate.... ;)

To try to put this in the language of the faith, surely there is some more redemptive way to push-back on an occasion like this.

Faith groups need to express their feeling that their values or lifestyle are being threatened if they feel that is the case, but to immediately jump to demands of occupational decapitation reduces the complaining group to about the same level as the radical fundamentalists in the Middle East who wanted the school teacher killed for letting the class name their teddy bear Mohammed.

I'm a Christian and I think that a suspension (longer than a week though, perhaps two weeks or a month) and requiring Jacobson to apologize publicly should be adequate punishment. If she doesn't apologize then the suspension should be extended until she does.

Oh please ::) ..It aint like every morning show in the USA hasnt done that already. I know Walton and Johnson down here have said anti christian things on the air. They are still on. Its not like its a KLOVE DJ or something.

Maybe the FCC needs to spend about $150M to study this case and waste all our time.

She made a stupid comment and she's obviously not mature enough to drink in moderation. Most of
us at one time or another do things like this. Maybe not as serious or in a group situation
like this. Has she actually apologized??? Wonder what % of the US population would
be unemployeed for making similar dumb mistakes. Geez, at this rate, we ought to just
rip everyones tongues out, so no one can offend anyone. Or we could just stone
this $(!%&__* *8^#&)) T4&)). Seriously, we're to the point that no one can say anything
without offending someone. It's all bound to catch up with us.

FTR, I don't like what she said AT ALL. But, I prefer to allow people to say things I
don't like over suspension of the words FREE SPEECH.

Forget substituting "Mohammed"; substitute "African-Americans", or "Blacks", or worse yet, "N-----s", and watch how many people would be calling for the person's job. Just ask Don Imus. Or Rush Limbaugh.

I have tried..for years ... to get over ESPN, lol. those without a life can research my posts....keywords "tampa" "sucks" , ..ok, not the second one..

I even forgave them..somewhat...for getting NASCAR back. I would have preferred Turner keep it with a revamped announce crew.

Now this.

She has got to go. And I'm real tolerant about what goes on air. even if your an athiest, or even if your scared of affending anyone with olive skin in a fishing vest, its downright unprofessional.

See? You don't have to go for the Deity.

The Imus situation was created by ESPN. Nobody noticed it until Jemelle Hill started complaining and the network started to make an issue out of it.

While I realize Jacobsen's comments were made off the air, Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder's comments were also said "off the record." This did not save Snyder as he was subsequently fired.

The only thing that is saving Jacobsen is-

A- ESPN's left-wing stance on all things.

B- No video has surfaced on this event.

It's sad when a comment nobody else heard on the air (and I have heard worse ones-RECENTLY-AND on the air) becomes grounds for this kind of action......

Bongwater, I'm sure you haven't heard "much worse" from others. For a Christian, there IS nothing worse that someone can say then "F--- Jesus". It doesn't get any worse, or any more offensive than that! Do you for a moment think that she wouldn't have been fired if she'd said, "F--- Mohammed" or "F--- black people"? Of course she would've been immediately fired for making such remarks (as she should be). Just as I think she should be fired for these remarks.

And Tibbs2, no one is saying Ms. Jacobson didn't have the right to say what she said. People in this country have the right to say almost anything. But when you say something that inflammatory and offensive, particularly when you are representing your employer, you have to be willing to suffer the consequences of your actions. There's not a thing wrong with believers pressuring ESPN to take stronger action against Jacobson. Because remember, "free speech" cuts both ways!

Dana Jacobsen said something stupid at a celebrity roast while inebriated.

HUGE difference between any garbage that Imus and Limbaugh spew on the radio--she actually has the context in which she said it on her side. These fundie Christian groups are looking for publicity, just like the same groups who came after Kathy Griffin (and her Jesus joke was actually funny).

Limbaugh was right about his comments. As stated before, Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder lost his job over off-the-air remarks. Intoxication is no excuse for stupidity. My point from earlier remains: had Jacobsen's comments been against Black people, gays, or other "protected classes", the hue and cry calling for her termination would be deafening. Instead, she only offended "fundies", so that's OK.

Nice double standard.

And who the hell are you religious control-freaks to tell ANYBODY how to discipline an employee of a company for which you do not run?

Or is this some sort of vengeance from Christian groups because everybody (except those with Christian blinders on) were calling for the most severe punishments when it was becoming public the HUGE sexual abuse case among a significant number of their priests over several decades?

Of course, THAT is a crime. And I don't feel the punishments were adequate. ::)

I believe Ms. Jacobson should serve community service - and work 500 hours as an anchor on EWTN. :-X

OK, then I hope that you feel the same way the next time someone makes an off-color remark about a group other than Christians. If you do, then I will respect this opinion.

I think what we're seeing here is a response to a perceived double-standard where public figures can get away with saying offensive things about Christians or whites (or any other "traditional" thing or value); but people are practically hanged for saying the same things about other "protected" behaviors or groups.

If every "insult" that offends a significant group is treated equally, then I - for one - will be quiet. The trouble is that we all know that's not the case.

By the way, making a blanket statement equating Christianity with a minority of (freak) priests is just as inane as equating homosexuality with disease. If I did that, I'd probably be banned here. At a minimum it's a nasty comment that was unnecessary in this forum.
