Christian in Panama City?

Thought PC already had some Christian stations...haven't been through there in a while, though, and I know
the radio lanscape's always changing..

I remember years ago WLTG-1430 "We Look to God" had a contemporary Christian format with, I think,
a few preaching/teaching programs in the morning. At that time, Tallahassee had only 1 Christian
station, a daytimer, and they only played CCM for a few hours on Saturday afternoons. So I enjoyed
discovering WLTG at that time..which I believe was in the early to mid-80s sometime. I don't know how long that lasted. I was working part time at the Tallahassee station..we and WLTG used to send each other our
music lists.

The station I really loved back in the old days was WJOE 1080 out of Port St. Joe. I was delighted to meet Beth Adkins four or five years ago..she was a manager of 'JOE in the late 60s and early 70s. The engineer was a gentleman named Jimmy Barnhill (now deceased) who also did some on-air work. They played some
Christian music in the mornings and country in the afternoons back then. I had a Panapet 70 round transistor
radio, and it picked up 1080 "Big Joe Radio..the tallest sound around" loud and clear at Mexico Beach. I think
Asterisk eventually took it silent.

Define what "Christian Radio" is as you see it. There are the stations that carry the paid programs of national religious figures, there are stations that operate much like a top-40 station but play Christian oriented music of a contemporary style, there are others that play a lot of music more in the praise music style, and then there are stations that play Southern Gospel with some local paid broadcasts, and then of course, there must be at least two or three popular styles of religious programming that speak primarily to the African American religious listener.

What specifically did you feel is needed in the Panama City area?

According to Radio-Locator there appears to be to operating FM stations in the NCE frequencies, one translator down in that territory, and a construction permit for an LPFM, all four operating in the religious category. Are non of them Christian radio as you see it? (I am not in your area so I can't listen to them and make my own conclusions.)

Far as I know now, Panama City has the following:

Calvary Chapel Translator at 88.5 (Owned by Calvary Chapel from Twin Falls ID)
WJTF Radio at 89.9 (Owned by Joy Public Radio)
WFFL Radio at 91.7 (Owned by Jimmy Swaggart)
WPCU Radio at 106.1 (Owned by Covenant Presbyterian Church)

Read that WAY FM was going to build two new translators there too.

Hope this helps out.  If I missed anything, feel free to correct me.

RDP has it mostly right.....89.9 is now owned by Family Life Radio out of Arizona.....the WAY-FM group has bought 88.3 out of Marianna and plans to move it to the Owen Wood Rd (Fountain) tower where PAP,FSY and 97X are located so they will have a pretty good signal into Panama City.......that 88.5 translator will not be protected when they move.....tough ...but those are the rules....besides all that translator does is play funeral music (my opinion). Sounds like that format (and all the "types" of that format) are pretty well covered. Unless you were planning on doing 24/7 Gregorian Chants ;)

Maybe that would be good background music for the live and local Ultra-Cool PFM that is being created in our minds.

Has been pretty quiet on this board, lately. This at least kept me from starting the debate on Sunny 98's
music --- good or bad?

Please consider the implication of this thread, a resident of the county doesn't even know whats already available in this format type. Consider that good airwaves are already serving the public interest in this format type with private and sometimes semi-public (grants) monies. They can also "raise" money from "sponsors" to further help the cause yet the people of their own listening area have no clue. can anyone say, "Preaching to the choir"? While commercial properties are operating in flat to declining revenue situations. When the next hurricane threatens town how many of these stations designed to "care for the lifestyle Christian listeners" will be on the air bring local and current information?

CC's right, let the chanting start.

Is WPSM-91.1 still going in that area?? Not sure if they go all the way to PCB, but I can recall hearing them around the Destin area on my way to PCB in 2003.

anyone think there's room for a Christian station here?

If we're talking Christian Contemp, sure. If WDJC can pull a 4 share in Birmingham, the format is probably good for the same or better in Panama City.

Christian AC or CHR would be a good pick for the new Lynn Haven FM. Or, for that matter, for any of about 3 or 4 currently-operating FM dogs in the market bring up the rear in the ratings game.
