Christian Secular Covers!

I love these covers!

Let's see...WFFH in Nashville has played Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You", Mr. Mister's "Kyrie", The Byrds' "Turn, Turn, Turn", and I heard Leann Rimes's "I Need You" this morning.

I looked at the Christian Rock charts and saw Pillar come out with U2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday".

Don't forget about DC talk covering "Lean On Me" years ago.

As I recall, "I Need You" was acutally released to Christian radio because it came from the soundtrack for "Jesus: The Epic Miniseries."

The songs you mentioned are the exception to the rule. Most Christian covers are suckish. I played them, but I wished the audience would just accept the intent of the original artist, who obviously was having a spiritual mindset when they wrote a song with scriptural insight.

Pillar had been performing Sunday Bloody Sunday live for almost two years before it was sent to radio.

Leann Rimes's song "I Need You" was supposed to be a Christian song. It was on the "Jesus" Album, she just did a very provocative video which obviously wasn't directed to Jesus. Jill Parr has done "If Ever I lose My Faith In You" and "In Your Eyes", Nicole Nordeman has a version of "Time After Time".

Not sure that I agree with you.

I spent a few minutes after I wrote the last post thinking of all the really GOOD Christian covers done by groups like DC Talk. And I still hear stations like KLTY use secular for musical beds, even when a Christian cover exists for the song. And in some cases excellent Christian covers. An example - why play the secular version of "Proud to be an American" when Jump 5 has an equal or better cover? Jump 5 has covered a lot of secular songs and they are fantastic!

Anyone remember when Greg. X Voltz did a remake of Aerosmith's Dream On?

Uh....because the audience would rather hear it because it's what the brain expects anyway?

We play them both - Jump5 and Lee Greenwood. I actually have Lee Greenwood's as my cell ringer for those patriotic holidays.

Yes!

I have that CD and another solo effort he put out. Greg X. Volz has one of the best voices in the world.

Russ Taff also covered The Call's "I Still Believe" back in 1989 or 1990.

Bruce,

I always respect your well-thought and informed opinion, even when it is contrary to my own.

So what I am about to say is INCREDIBLY petty...

It's not "Proud to be an American" -- it's "God Bless the USA."

My ultimate pet peeve in radio has always been when people get titles wrong. I'm not sure why -- maybe with all the time we spend announcing the titles and artists of songs, for folks to still get them wrong strikes me as evidence that they aren't listening to what we say. As a professional communicator, I take that personally. It just bugs the ever-lovin' snot out of me.

As I said, it's very shallow of me -- for that much, I apologize. I'm no closer to perfect than anyone else.

PS. I prefer the first Acapella cover -- circa '85 or '86, without all the drum machine junk -- to either version you mentioned. The original Lee Greenwood is still the definitive version and that's the one folks expect.
