Christine Craft Out at KSAC

The Sacramento Bee reports that Christine Craft has parted ways with the liberal AM talk station KSAC-AM 1240 after being unable to reach a new contract with station owner Paula Nelson.

HUGE loss. (Cue Hindenburg "humanity" soundbite)

But seriously, I can't believe she's still on the air. Worked with her in the early 90s. She was certainly nice. But her show...awful.

really...you worked with me in the early nineties when I won thousands of extra dollars because I posted ratings higher than KFBK has now???and by the way..I am not now ..nor have I ever claimed to be "nice"/. To hear more of those "awful" shows....try KGO where I've worked for fifteen years..Funny how the number one station in NOrthern California..if not the country keeps calling me back....christine

and one more thing...I'm looking at the spring ratings book 2007...women 25+ I beat everything else on KSAC..including ed schultz, the fabulous stephanie,,,etc. etc. I think the one problem I couldn't solve at KSAC was that it NEVER HAD ANY SALESPEOPLE!! Actually to be accurate ..for a three week period in the three years I was there...they had two guys who ran out of the building screaming... I have utterly no skills at selling..and so when I was offered a 70% cut in pay to do two thirds less of a show if I could find advertisers...I knew that it simply was out of the question.. The hundreds ..indeed thousands of people who attended the colorful and artful political rallies I organized (much with my own money) prove that my show was successful as an outlet for the political outrage that legitimately characterizes this country right now...and once again..I am absolutely not nice.

Your selling yourself right now. You ARE a salesperson!

What I don't understand is why does Paula Nelson own a radio station? Diamond Broadcasting doesn't seem particularly interested in making KSAC local or successful.

Sorry Christine...didn't like your show...Still don't. Weekends on KGO is certainly an accomplishment. However, it doesn't mean anything in terms of how good the show is.

My opinion (and really, that's all we do here...share opinions and throw in a fact every once in awhile) is based, for me, on overall entertainment...

However, I do agree with a lot of your views. I just prefer your writing over your on-air presentation.

Although you probably wouldn't be as nice in light of my shared opinions, you were very nice to those who worked with you in the early 90s. Hey, who knows...Maybe you've degenerated. :)

FYI...I've done every shift on KGO numerous times..Ronn Owens, Bernie Ward, Ray Taliaferro, Gene Burns, Godtalk, Shann Nix,Joannie Greggains, On the Go, etc. etc. etc. ,including lots of weekends. YOu don't have to like my show or agree with my views. But I'm very proud to have just won the sobriquet Sacramento's "Best Radio Personality" by the Sacramento News and Review...even from a tiny, teeny little 1000 watt station run by Paula Nelson. I wish she would send me my plaque and the bottle of wine that goes with it...

As far as "niceness" goes...please remember that I had written my book,"Too Old, Too Ugly, Not Deferential to Men" prior to ever coming to live in Sacramento..many years before working at KFBK. That title and the federal litigation targeting the sexist practices of television news...a case that went all the way to the SCUS(Supreme Court of the United States) should clue you in that I am and always have been edgy ..not nice. I'm not the nice little compliant broadcast female who never rocks the boat..( ?).on the contrary.

I suppose I'm nice to my 91 year old 6'5" father whose diapers I've changed every day for the last seven years...who has lived with me in my guest cottage for thirteen years...I'm "nice" to abused critters too... I only remember "working" with one person at KFBK..I do remember seeing others like that lovely Miss Kitty.

Hey Christine:

The worst thing you can do is respond to anonymous sharpshooters on these boards. While it's easy to get carried away after reading a fair/unfair criticism, I'm sure you understand the futility in involving yourself in arguments over something as subjective as how good your show is.

In the world of messageboards, whether I think you're good or not, it's beneath you.

I don't feel it's beneath me ....and I have never ever made the claim that my show is better or best or any such...others have done that!! cheers.cc

Anyone that is as dedicated to the care of a father as you are Christine is way more than just nice. I would say you live up very well to your namesake. And your dad is certainly blessed to have a devoted daughter such as you. You are one "Classy Lady" and a great radio professional to boot! Heres to many more years of success to you! Take Care... :D ;)

Christine is looking after an elderly parent -- something I dare say many of us would be scared to even think about. This, while doing radio and continuing activism for causes she believes in.

This being the character of the person involved, does any criticism of her radio show make a bloody bit of difference....really?

Good on you, Christine.

Though the operator of KSAC is poor...how does having a revolving door of production people effect the content/style of Craft's show? It's like blaming the detail guy at the car wash for bad brakes.

I have heard her in SF, she is not bad, but not exactly a "wow" talent.

The whole AA/stations that are all about agenda will never win...not enough good content beyond to bring in a mass appeal audience...

Basically anyone would have trouble in that environment. Unless you have a host that can do their own production, screen calls and run their own board in an awkward studio setup.

I hear you there...one needs to the "tools to succeed"...but call screeners are usually interns, and in this day and age, one better know how to do more then just host a show...I ran my own board for many years...most do unless you are bigger outfit, or in a Major Market.

That is the problem nowadays, less real radio pros/broadcasters, and more folk who are lawyers, politicians, or from some other realm. Only in this industry do we want "non-industry" people.

Next time I go to the Dr.'s office, I want a "non-medical" person to help me. Makes sense, right?!

Actually I've talked and run the board at KGO many, many times...but it is a board that actually works.......! if you get my drift.. the revolving door of production people at ksac simply meant NO ONE TO DO ANY PRODUCTION 80% of the time I was there...and a boss who would not ALLOW anyone other than her family members , herself, or her production person to touch the primitive ..but occasionally functional equipment.....

i still had fun and made a big difference ie helped get the fabulous Debra bowen elected(SOS California making the hackable voting machine companies tremble), bravely challenged the assertion of federal jurisdiction in California medicinal marijuana cases, organized several artful and completely fun political protests involving thousands of people ,brought you "Ask a Muslim" every week with a real live Muslim leader(no I wasn't afraid at all)and oh yes, was named radio personality of the year by the news and review.. Shiite ...I must have been doing something right...also had the highest ratings of anything on that station women 25+...

I have to laugh at the argument that "agenda" driven radio can't succeed..what the hell do you think Rush's show is.?...and all the untalented people who try to mimic him and get on stations from coast to coast. ta ta.
p.s. anybody local notice that after four solid days of deliberation ..the jury in the so-called "shaken baby " case are deadlocked. No one from any news operation even bothered to read the trial file at the courthouse...or actually sit in a courtroom and hear testimony. yet they claimed to "cover " the trial.I actually had reporters up there every day..then the father threatened to sue my boss....all of a sudden I had no job. I rest my case.

and one more thing dammit....Don't imply that just because I am also a lawyer....I am not a broadcaster... Check out the exhibit devoted to my broadcasting credentials at the "NEWSEUM"
in Washinton D.C. ...It's the Museum of Broadcast News..once again I rest my case.

I've had to work with half-assed equipment before. It really can throw a person off their game. We had a 360 phone editor not working for a few days on the morning show because the night guy crashed it. Lots of malfunctioning equipment.

Lazy engineers...."We'll get to it". Meanwhile I had to take live calls from a rock audience. Treacherous.

Hi Christine:

KFBK is not all about Rush..he is integral, but the stations is more then his "agenda". They have News, the have Bruce Maiman, other sows that have mass appeal

KSAC is ALL ABOUT POLITICS OF THE LEFT...even if I share those views, it is akin to getting meat all the time without some salad, or a dessert! Not the best analogy, but you get the idea.

That is what I mean...it is one spoke in a five spoke wheel.. To base ones' livelyhood as an operator on that one spoke is not sound radio. And only AA stations or the Salem stations do that..and look at their numbers...lower then those who have more mass appeal. To win in radio, you have to garner the greatest amount of listeners...fringing ones self is not the way to do that.
