Christmas 2020

The Philly(ish) Christmas Wars have begun.

Mix 99.5 WJBR flipped the switch this morning to All-Christmas. Earliest I can remember them flipping.

B101 said they're doing a "Christmas Preview Weekend" this weekend. That was announced before WJBR flipped, so we'll see if that forces the hand of B101 at all.

On the fringes of the Philly market, no sign of 100.7 WLEV in Allentown making the switch yet.

WJBR is a non factor in Philadelphia. If anything, the Christmas preview but feels like cover to start “by popular demand” regardless of WJBR.

WLEV was technically the first to go all-Christmas this year, back in late March when they played Christmas music for an entire weekend in response to the first wave of COVID-19.

Would WISX join in the X-Mas bandwagon too?

They hadn't before. They seemed content to let B101, WJBR (and at that time) WOGL fight it out.

They probably hedge their bet like WOGL used to do. Will we retain more of our listeners if we stay the course, or go All-Christmas? So far it's been stay the course.

It's a tough spot, and the state of the market this year upends things a bit more than usual.

Earlier when the Breeze was newer, my fake betting money was on standing pat. Now...I'm not so sure. They've pulled closer in the topline numbers. Is there a weakness they could pounce on? Maybe. Would they win? Ehhhh, not thinking that's likely. But they might be in a better position to make the move this year. They haven't jumped in yet, to my knowledge, so maybe their analysis says no.
