Christmas Bets????

Its getting close to that time of year again.. Except this year things are a bitmore interesting, with WHTT, Star, JYE and Jack all in the AC mix what can we expect?
Id like to ask these questions of you guys..

1)Who will flip first and when?
2)Will another staion jump into the Jingle wars?
3)Will a station get out of the Jingle wars?
4)Can Star or JYE afford to flip?
50 And any other interesting thoughts you might have on the whole scene..

No Well, No Well

We got no water 'cause we got No Well...

RU Kidding? Star is so hungry for listeners that they may flip the day after Halloween. 'JYE is sure to flip within 12-hours of Star, so it could be an INTERMINABLE Christmas season this year.

As for my prediction, I say that Star goes first, at 6:00 PM on the Thursday before Thanksgiving.

I don't see Jack or WHTT flipping to Christmas.

I'd like to say same as last year, but Regent may very well go ahead with Christmas music the day after thanksgiving on...what was that frequency again?

Conventional wisdom holds that the first to go all-Xmas wins, although "he who markets best" is always a winning formula, regardless.

I always figured if one AC in the market goes All-Christmas, it's an opportunity for the other AC to steal listeners, but Buffalo isn't the only market with multiple all-holiday stations. They wouldn't do it if it didn't work, whether that's ratings, revenue, or both.

HD and weaving the web

Since we have HD channels for certain stations plus most are streaming, how bout the return of 24-7, 365, we never close Christmas on one of these 'channels'???

Last year, WHTT streamed holiday music on the web. I wouldnt call it a ratings stealer, but it's convienent and may personalize at work holiday listening.

Since im not in the key format for this temporary format spin, I can handle my small dose of Burl Ives and Mariah and even barking dogs.... just not 24-7

If memory serves correct, I "won" last year's Christmas Pool, using the Price is Right rules and thanks to a few guys in the biz with whom I stay in touch. Yeah, I know... big freakin' deal, but at least I gave my partners the credit they richly deserved.

Here's my sump-pump-prediction. WJYE flips to Christmas first, last year having been nosed out by Star by about eight hours. I'm saying WJYE flips the day BEFORE Thanksgiving, probably in the early afternoon. So that would be 11-22-06... around 3 p.m.

Star will flip within hours, if not minutes, because you gotta figure the PD's have all the music ready to roll and everything set up in their automation programs and Selector or whatever scheduling software they use.

As to WHTT... the thinking by some folks within the biz is, the minute WJYE and Star go All Christmas, WHTT pulls out the stops and rolls more 70's, 80's, 90's and re-currents than we've ever heard on that frequency since it was WNYS, sprinkling in Christmas music three or four times an hour and streaming All Christmas on its website. The question is, will the 60's hits be gone or will WHTT continue to play one or two an hour, just to hold on to as many 55-64 customers as necessary.

Just my buck-tree-eighty, for what it's worth.[/Mike]

The WHTT question is a good one indeed.
Will they drop 60's?
Or, if they do plan to keep away from 60's music, is there enough 60's music with more of a 70's feel to it?
There's a good excuse to keep (some) 60's music on the playlist.

As for the Christmas music, It wouldn't surprise me if WHTT puts their Christmas music online again.

A guess? We don't know what numbers Jack is getting these days (they could be as disastrous as Jack in New York City for all we know)...if they're bad, Jack will flip first sometime in mid-November, and stay with holiday stuff until the end of New Year's Day before rolling out yet another new format. JYE and Star will follow around Thanksgiving time, unaffected by whatever Jack does (after all, a tree falling in a forest might as well not make a sound if no one is there to listen).

WHTT won't flip at all, probably won't even change its music mix much except to gradually phase in one, two, three, then maybe up to four holiday-related songs an hour, upping the holiday music count as Christmas approaches, then go back to normal on 12/26.

Re: Christmas Beats

Here's an unconventional perspective: Jack is doing quite nicely. Sorry to disappoint those of us (including me) who loath the station, but I have it on good account that WBUF had a very successful Summer book.

If this year is anything like last, WJYE and WTSS will face off with Christmas music on Thanksgiving eve or the day after Thanksgiving. I think Radknowski called it right in his post (as annoying as his posts sometimes are, he did get it right last year.)

Here's where my take differs from other posters. I think WHTT will jump into the Christmas music battle and when it's all over the day after Christmas, become a Hot AC station, leaving any semblance of Oldies behind for good. The strategy being that WHTT clouds the water for WTSS and WJYE, picks up a good chunk of shared Christmas music listening and when it's all over, WHTT will be Hot AC, picking up the shared AC listeners.

So, it could be a three way Christmas party in Buffalo. Won't that be merry!

There will NOT be a 3-way battle for Christmas in Buffalo, Element. That's laughable. WHTT is going to stay the course, picking up whatever stray listeners JYE and STAR leave behind this Thanksgiving, leaving Jack to do what Regent thinks Jack should do, which at this point is still undecided.

After the Summer Book the ratings picture is cloudy, to say the least, with Star closing the gap with JYE, and WHTT going down. Jack didn't do as well as Element's "good account" claims, either. They're a third or fourth favorite station at best, stealing a little bit from everyone. To put it simply, you can't build listener loyalty without listener loyalty!

Some crazy theories on this board....

If their numbers are still in the 7 to 8 share range 12+, why would they want to do that and challenge Star 102 when they're faring better by staying where they are? Have they really fallen in the books since Arbitron started embargoing the market, enough to justify throwing their current branding away? (I've been hearing that they're still healthy, though my sources, good as they are, may not be 100% right...)

Obviously, proprietary information cannot be disclosed, but I've enjoyed reading this thread and there are some very interesting opinions. Suffice to say, WHTT is healthy. Wobbles and kisses can occur in any single book. Everybody knows the ratings battles are hard fought, especially in Spring and Fall. In this market there are no slackers, everybody works hard.

Ratings? Well... some days you're the bat, some days you're the ball.

Jim, as always for the past year, you and WHTT has been doing an awsome job. I can't really see the corelations between WHTT, STAR AND WJYE. I like WJYE, but they strike me as more of a softer ac. As for Star 102.5, well they strike me as a radio station you graduate to after you get to old for Kiss, you someone who wants to think they are still hanging on to there youth, but they don't want to associate with the teen crowed. Then again, come thanksgiving, this won't make sence anymore because we all know what is going to happen. Jingle Bells 96.1, Santa 102.5, Merry Ho, Ho 97.3. Jim Pastrick, if you are reading this, please tell your management at 'HTT that they should not play the Christmas 24/7 game. Thanks Jim.

97.3? As in Toronto's EZ rock? Yes, I could see them going all Christmas as early as (American) Thanksgiving week-end, but was that the station you meant?

Yes it was, sorry to cause any confussion. It is just that EZ Rock 97.3 is readily availble in Western New York, that I didn't even think of saying "Toronto"

i think WJYE and STar will be xmas this year...like in the past...i don't see jack playing xmas music except for the odd tune. It is possible WHTT could switch.

Funny how 97.3 reaches WNY fine, but closer to home...how is the signal for Niagara's 105.7 EZ rock?

Merely an effort to entice your participation in the discussion. Crazy? No. Outlandish. Most assuredly. Thanks for the response, so very well articulated it could have originated from 50 James Casey Drive. Well said, Fred.

...And, like I said last year, I still say Jack is a good home for Christmas Parody music.
After all, they do play what they want. ;D
