Christmas comes to Mobile two times...

... and it's not the stations you'd expect. WYCL My 107.3 has dropped their 70's and 80's oldies format and is now "My Christmas Station".

Also, one of Cumulus' Top-40 failures, WJLQ 100.7, has flipped to Christmas. This one is a suprise seeing as how we've all been waiting for for a format change on WYOK 104.1. Maybe this means the're sticking with Hot 104 and looking for a new format for 100.7?

In the past WMXC, WMEZ, and WPCS have all done the Christmas thing...

Q100 is the Gulf Coast's Christmas station. This weekend and every weekend til Christmas, Q100 will play continuous Christmas music. All of your holiday favorites.

But we know you love Q100 music. And we don't want to inundate you with too much Christmas music like other radio stations, so on Monday morning we will return to our regular programming playing Matchbox 20, Sheryl Crow, the Goo Goo Dolls and so much more.

We're playing just enough Christmas music to get you into the Christmas spirit.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

it's rare for me to say this but.... christmas music is far better than their normal music

I think it is just a case of who can win the great christmas music chase first.

Arrow 100.7 was a great classic rock station. However, the WJLQ call letters and the "Q100" moniker have been around a lot longer. Q100 in the '80s was a ratings powerhouse in Pensacola.

In the '90s the owners kept tweaking WJLQ so much... Q100 (which was historically adult-leaning CHR) went to Super Q-100.7 (CHR) then Q-100.7 (AC), then Magic 100.7 (Urban AC), and then they settled on Classic Rock with Arrow and a call letter change to WWRO which lasted about 6 years.

In 2000 Cumulus launched Q100 as a mainstream CHR but they also had launched Star 104 in Mobile as the same format. They tweaked Star 104 to Hot AC and then flipped it to '80s. When Star 104 died and Hot 104 was born, Q100 became Hot AC and was advertised as "Pensacola's Best Music Variety," which implied a Pensacola-only station.

Now, they are using "The Gulf Coast's Best Music" in an effort to include Mobile and possibly Ft. Walton Beach. Since there is no Hot AC in Mobile, Q100 has the potential to increase their audience share.

Lately they have added some older and softer songs which are more like mainstream AC, perhaps to steal away some Lite Mix or Soft Rock listeners. I don't think a format flip is coming any time soon on either 100.7 or 104.1.

Even though some have proven that "Pensacola mostly listens to Pensacola stations" and "Mobile mostly listens to Mobile stations", the longtime success of WBLX and WABB would seem to warrant an attempt to win both metros, regardless of what city the station is licensed to.

Knowing full well what 12+ numbers are worth, WJLQ would seem to be the worst rated big-signaled FMs that cover both Mobile and Pensacola. I could imagine 100.7 bills fairly well in its target demo, but might still get outclassed by competitors. So I don't know what's in store for WJLQ.

WYOK? Who knows? Someone here posted what seemed like 'makes sense' information about a format flip. Personally, the heavy use of 104.1 to simulcast "United Broadcasters of New Orleans" led me to believe that its CHR format was no longer a priority to Cumulus. But they seem to rebounded somewhat from the buzzkill Hurricane Ivan put on it in late 2004. 'HOT' was on a serious roll before Ivan and the several lineup/personnel changes, but Mobile seems to be tuning in again.

But if I had to pick, I'd say 100.7 changes before 104.1 does...100.7, Jack-FM, anyone?
______________

Why do you think 100.7 has such dismal ratings? You're right - they have a strong signal - seems a shame the ratings are so low. Hot AC is not so hot a format?

How were the ratings when it was Arrow with Classic Rock? Every post about Arrow seems to talk about how great of a Classic Rock station it was - I am not a big classic rock fan, but I listened to the Arrow occasionally. They did play some good tunes. How did Arrow compare (ratings-wise) to 96.1 The Rocket? I know that Lisa Cagle used to be with Arrow and then moved to 96.1 after 100.7 flipped to CHR. Did the ratings of 100.7 improve at all when it flipped to Q100 as CHR? And then from CHR to Hot AC?

I couldn't answer any of those questions--I'm not a radio professional and don't have any of the hard information to make an educated guess.

What I DO know (using those 'useless' 12+ numbers again) is that WJLQ isn't the most listened to station in Pensacola. I have to assume the station does well in it's target demos, probably women 25-54.

I remember "Arrow 100.7", and it lasted quite a while, but the "Arrow" classic rock formula was still pretty new at the time. Speculating again, it almost had to have done well in Mobile and P-cola given the demise of rock on WGCX 104.1--of course, things were much different with pre-1996 radio.

**IIRC, Arrow and "The Rocket" never faced each other--after WJLQ returned to CHR, 96.1 went classic rock after WAVH and "The Wave" moved to 106.5. I'm not sure 'who owned who' at that point, but I'm guessing Clear Channel was responsible for 96.1's classic rock turn.**

**I could be extremely wrong on all of this...I was in high school when all of this was going on, so someone else can definitely set me straight on any of this!
______________

TK-101 also debunks the Mobile/Mobile-Pensacola/Pensacola mindset as well, although admittedly TK does better in Pensacola traditionally.

IMO, Arrow was always kinda held back by its' playlist and morning show. They always seemed to play the same 60 or so songs while the Rocket went deeper in the beginning. The "Homegrown Morning Show" never quite latched on, except for those who couldn't stand JB&B.

I know it is popular to say that Hot is going away. But when I was there last weekend, Hot was the better sounding CHR.

I have like 40 or so tapes of arrow throughout the years (1995 - 2000) They weren't that repetitive, my last tapes from them (2000) was certainly not as good as it previously had been, at the time of recording they had started making changes, going from Arrow 100.7 "All Rock & Roll Classics" to Arrow 100 "Gulf Coast Classic Rock" Ditch in the morning (actually recorded it on his first day too) 1996-1997 was when they sounded the best, and I beleive rocket came to be in 96, or that was atleast the first time I had heard it. While Arrow is still the subject... anyone know who did their imaging, They had a differn't guy around 97/98 but went back to the old one, and i have not been able to find out who either one is. I wonder where Greg and Tim are today.... hmm
______________

I'm no longer convinced of this, either. Our 'source' (or sources) have had some good speculation, but it's all been wrong--the latest notion was for the axe to fall around Thanksgiving...yet WYOK is still talking CHR turkey.
______________
