Christmas Day Programming

In today's Newstalk Edge column there is a discussion about what talk stations air on Christmas day. Many play Christmas music and/or tell Christmas stories etc.

An unnamed top 10 talk PD said that nbody wants to hear "Obama is a Socialist" on Christmas day. Well he is wrong when it comes to me. I enjoy that kind of talk anytime and can not get enough of it. In fact it might be all the more satisfying on Christmas because everything comes to a stop that day. There is a lot of small talk around the dinner table and to hear a serious political discussion would be refreshing.

This is one area where the internet is superior to talk radio. If someone like me wants to escape the warm and fuzzies and indulge in politics and some very important issues the internet is always there. Web sites won't change formats for a day on Christmas.

I guess if your life is so empty that you have to listen to the radio on Christmas day, you might as well have political rants to listen to.

I enjoy stomping on Obama over his Socialism as much as you do...but Christmas Day?

A day that is supposed to be dedicated to peace, love, goodwill towards your fellow man?
I think we should cut Obama or pretty much anyone else some slack on Christmas.
I just disagree with the man on virtually everything....I don't hate him, and I don't
particularly want to ruin his Christmas.

Rush actually does a very nice Christmas music show on Christmas, which I enjoy.
I am typically not a fan of Christmas music, but that is the day for it, and he plays a
very nice selection.

What does Rush play on Christmas Day, play Tom Sawyer, Limelight, or a hidden jem like By-Tor and the Snow Dog?

Your life must really be empty.

My post might give you the wrong idea on some things. For example I like Christmas music and enjoy it every holiday season. Also, I have many other interests besides politics. But politics is one of my lifelong passions and there is not one day where I don't think about it, including Christmas.

There are some formats that don't change their programming for Christmas. For example CHRs might play a Christmas song or two an hour but overall it's business as usual. The CHR fan will turn on their favorite station on Christmas day and get to hear Lady Gaga, "Like a G6" and all the other hits they enjoy any other day. Good for them, that's the way it should be. If they want all Christmas music they know where to get it. I would prefer talk radio be the same.

How about taking a break from radio just for one day? Most people do other things on Christmas than listen to the radio. I bet even most political talks show hosts don't listen much to radio on Christmas Day.

The radio played a central part in A Christmas Story.
Especially the scene at the end where the parents are
watching it snow while tuned to Christmas music.

I have always listened to the radio on Christmas day,
the one day I can actually be in the mood for Christmas music.
Also one of the AM's in my area plays Christmas episodes of
old-time radio shows on Christmas Day, which is kinda cool.
Not ignoring the family, just have it on while doing various things.

Also had a friend who was the jock who always got stuck
working Christmas night after the recorded holiday programs ended....
I always listened cause I felt bad.

I'm trying to imagine the Geddy Lee version of "O Holy Night". Not like playing the Slim Whitman version left
any unbroken glass in the house...

No I have never taken a break from radio on Christmas day. I have all my life listened to radio during fringe times...holidays, 3 in the morning, etc. I'm the kind of person who could tell you everything I heard on the radio Christmas day 1980 for example.

I'm sure you mean well, but indulging in the things I enjoy on Christmas does not make me empty...instead it fills my life with joy. Yes, "most people" do what most people do but if that was the key to happiness antidepressants wouldn't be so popular.

Our old-time radio Christmas special does really really well bringing in non-traditional listeners on Christmas day.
