Christmas in July coming back to the upstate!

Star 99.5 is promoting Christmas in July on Friday, July 24th with 24 hours of Christmas music. Tied in with a Christmas vacation giveaway.

Didn’t have that on my bingo card with WSPA-FM long gone! Of course they aren’t doing the 72 hours or however long 98.9 did it in July.

Star 99.5 is an occaisional but fringe signal (at best) here in Gaffney, (Although, X98.5 has been a solid & decent signal here lately, and it shares the same tower with Star 99.5, and has slightly less power as well (220w vs 250w).

There was great tropo DX earlier today, instead of Star, I heard WMAG from NC on 99.5 (said they're playing 80s music all weekend). 🤷‍♂️

When I was in Spartanburg the other week, I was surprised how well the 99.5 signal carries in to downtown via Bus-85 and 585. Didn’t really hear much static.

98.5 has issues in parts of Spartanburg county due to being close to the WSPG translator at 98.3.

Yea, the Star 99.5 signal does pretty well until about the Cherokee County line exit 83 .. yet X98.5 's signal does better by a few more miles, reaching to the big Peach 🍑 by then both 99.5 & 98.3 are weak & fade out just before the city limits of Gaffney (going east from there is 98.3 's translator in Gastonia for His Radio).

I think the 98.3 WSPG Spartanburg signal is mostly redundant, and is overlapped by 104.9 in programming from the Fox Sports brand, and also from X98.5 's coverage area completely.

That 98.3 Spartanburg Stick used to be the broadcast location for 97.1 (W246CV). Not far from there its easy to hear adjacent 96.9 swap from WKKT / W245CH, even while driving right by the current 97.1 site.

As I’ve said many times, 98.5 and 99.5 are by far the overall best translator signals in the market being non directional and on Paris Mtn. I can get 99.5 on 85 down to MM 27 in Anderson County so that’s around 60 miles down the 85 corridor for a translator! I haven’t checked 98.5 in Anderson county but it’s probably about the same.

Since translators don’t have limitations as far as height, I wonder why 99.5 runs 220 instead of the max 250 watts.
