Christmas in Tulsa

Ok so last year Mix 96 gave up the all Christmas format and 94.1 the Sound picked it up with very high ratings. So now the Sound has changed to lite rock 94.1 The Breeze so you know they will be doing an all Christmas format this year. So the question is when will 94.1 start the Christmas format and will Mix 96 try to take back the title of Tulsa's Official Christmas Station or is it to late?

From everything I heard, Mix was happy with its performance in the Fall book and held steady in the ratings despite not becoming the home of the cool yule. The reason Mix didn't go all-Christmas was because it was losing too many of its regular listeners in previous years. Yes, it was getting more listeners total because it was pulling a little off of everybody, thus making back what it lost, but its regular listeners weren't happy.

So, I don't see much incentive for it to become the Christmas music station after, or maybe even before, Thanksgiving, but, with a new direct competitor, Mix probably has the most to lose if The Breeze were to go all Christmas.

It doesn't make sense to switch to all Christmas unless you are trying to kill an old format and shed the previous listeners.

Is there a station switching formats?

Perhaps KMOD could be the Christmas station this year before they reformat and hire a new staff.

Listeners of the AC format listen to the christmas format. I think 94.1 will always do it now that they have a new format. I think it's important for them to do it right. It seem like stations in any market that does it early get talked about a lot. I think 94.1 should do at the first of November with lots of imaging with what there current format is and that it will return after christmas. A lot of people who listen to mix 96 dosent even know the breeze is even there. We will see what they do.

Actually, surveys show time and again that AC listeners don't listen to all Christmas significantly more than listeners of other formats. The AC target audience of 25-54 females may listen to AC more than the younger female and male demos, but only a fraction of those listeners are tuned to the AC station at any given time. In Tulsa, the country stations are quite popular among 25-54 females. K-Hits has also done well among that audience over the years, though I suspect most of those 25-54 ratings are from the younger part of that demo.

94.1 started the Christmas format this morning (November 15). Sounds good so far.
