Christmas Music Already

I can't believe "My 101.7 FM" has already hit the Christmas switch on the Holiday music...38 days before Christmas, I bet next year, it starts on November 1st, its becoming a contest to see who can be the first one to do so...Happy Holidays and I bet by Christmas the jocks will be tired of playing those same titles over and over again by different artist.

How many years ago was it when 900am in Canton started this Christmas thing? as I recall they were the first station in the USA to go all Christmas before Thanksgiving.

i yearn for the days of 1x per hour 4 weeks before christmas

2x per hour 3 weeks before etc etc......

this flippin all christmas gets my scrooge on really early!!!!!!!!

Clear Channel's (Jacor) Marc Chase got the idea about 2000-01 when he kept seeing huge numbers for a small market station in the mountains of PA. The spike occurred every November into Dec. All Xmas ever since.

Oh, Light 99.9 in Dayton and 93.3FM in Columbus, both CC stations, are rollin out the Christmas tunes.

"Big 106.1" WBBG-FM/Youngstown (another CC station) is all Xmas music right now.

Oh, and the first station in the market to do this was... WMVX/106.5! Which at the time, IIRC, had Dave Popovich as PD. And now programs WDOK... that station keeps up the "tradition" of sorts... they should flip by Thanksgiving, if not earlier.

I'm predicting this will be the biggest ratings year for Xmas stations since 9/11....

When things are bad (economy) people revert to tradition for an escape.

Stations that flip early?

Smart.

'Cause we all need a little Christmas, this-year.

WMJI used to go all Christmas the week leading up to Xmas Day.

I still have the "Santa Sightings" that we (Doc, Me, Chip and others) produced circa 1998 and they would get played on Xmas Eve.

Going all Xmas outside of the week before is nauseating. To me anyway.

The big problem with the all-Christmas format is that most of the music being played is pretty crappy.

Robert Conrad
WCLV

robert--i agree. hearing madonna do marilyn in santababy once an hour IS nauseating and crappy--david

What I wonder about.... stations are tripping over each other to go all Christmas first but some stop playing exclusive Christmas music before the 25th is over. Why not keep it foing for a day or two... especially this year when you have Christmas on Thursday leading into a 4-day weekend?

I'm surprised, too, that someone isn't already all over the format. As pointed out earlier when times are tough people want that "feel good" from holiday music. As you may recall, the whole concept really got off the ground post 9/11 in 2001.

Yes, Mr. Conrad, lots of crappy Christmas tunes out there, but I still have to hear Alvin & The Chipmunks at least once or twice to get in the spirit <g>.

I can only tolerate hearing "Jingle Bell Rock," "Santa Baby," "War Is Over (If You Want It)" and "Have A Holly Jolly Christmas" only SO much.

True, we may all need a little Christmas. But there really hasn't been any good NEW, ORIGINAL holiday-related music made in over 40 years... if you really think about it. Who really has followed in the footsteps of Vince Guaraldi or John Lennon? (Manheim Steamroller/Chip Davis doesn't count in MY book, sorry.)

The new "Elvis Duets" is refreshing with contemporary country singers (all female) "dueting" with E.

Martina McBride and Elvis on "Blue Christmas" is fantastic. The video.. where she appears alongside E at the 1968 Comeback Special is cool. The behind the scenes video is great too.

All can be seen on GoogleTube... er YouTube.

Gretchen Wilson's duet is a real rocker.

Playing these older, but now "new" versions, would spice things up.

WMJI is promoting it's Xmas Channel available at www.wmji.com Can you take the web with you? Most cannot.
