Christmas Music and CHR/Pop radio

How many stations out there do not even touch Christmas music? I know WAKS/Cleveland doesn't (at least to my knowledge, haven't heard a single Christmas song on the station in any December since they have signed on). On Christmas Day, they have often gone to "Commercial Free Kiss Music" for the day, but it's still the CHR music we all know and love.

I know there are several stations that do add Christmas music to their playlists as the holiday grows closer. What do you think? Should Christmas music be on CHR radio circa 2005?

WKIE "92 KISS FM" played The Christmas Shoes, Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer, Jingle Bell Rock, etc. All the traditional ones occationally back in December 2000 when it was a CHR under Big City Radio.

WIFC Wausau plays the occational Christmas track. Usually traditional or some Trans Siberian Orchestra track.

WKSC Chicago plays Christmas music on Christmas eve/day only.

WXSS plays pop artist (Britney, Ashanti, Nsync, etc) Christmas tracks and for some reason Kyle Broflovski (South Park) - Lonely Jew On Christmas Christmas eve and Christmas day only. In 2002 (When they were a very well balanced CHR) they played the traditional (Burl Ives, Brenda Lee, etc) Christmas songs on Christmas eve and Christmas day.

WZEE Madison plays the occational Christmas track.


Personally I think the CHRs should play at LEAST an OCCATIONAL Christmas track during the season.

I think CHR should play (some) christmas songs, but not any of the old Traditional stuff. Burl ives should not be played on a chr in 2005. Also, Chr shouldnt play Christmas music untill the final week before Christmas, and no more than once an hour. Thats my take. I know WSPK K-104 plays an occasional XMAS track. However, 99.7 WDJX LOUISVILLE has never ever been Christmas Friendly, in fact on Christmas day, they usually play the top 100 songs of the year.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by midwestclubber on 12/09/05 06:30 PM.</FONT></P>

WE Made it a contest... whenever we play a Holiday song we look for caller 10 to go through Santa's Sack and win stuff... big prize is an XBOX 360! Our way to play holiday music and make people listen through it.

They also go Commerical Free Christmas music for 18+ hours starting in the afternoon on Christmas Eve playing everything from Bing Crosby to TSO. I like it.

And I think Christmas music does well, even on K104. I don't know of any complaints. They mainly play the upbeat, feel good songs. They love to play Bruce Springsteen's "Santa Clause is Comin' to Town" and if a CHR stations plays holidya music, then they're likely to stick more with the pop tunes and "silly" songs. But like you said, K104 does play some classics.

I agree with you. There's a lot of mainstream-CHR Christmas music coming from Contemporary Christian artists, but I'd imagine a lot of it isn't even being serviced to CHR/Pop (much less CHR/Rhy), and what has been sent doesn't always get the best results.<P ID="signature">______________
