christmas music in philly who will do it this year ?

only reason im posting this is because d to the j started a post about it on the radio-info ny board and i figure i would start one here

so here are my picks for 2009

95.7 ben-fm flips sometime around november 18th no djs just christmas music plus 95.7 has a better signal then 97.5

now 97.5 get the listeners who dont wanna hear christmas music and move russel to now 97.5 until the christmas tunes are done on 95.7

b101.1 all christmas im going with november 19th a day after ben flips

what ever happens with 95.7-97.5 its a win win for greater media

I like your thinking but B101 will hold off till November 20-25.WOGL may try and do it first this year.I don't see 97.5 going all Christmas this year there will be some in there mix.I think November 1-10 we will see an all Christmas station WBEN,WOGL or maybe even WISX.I think it will be WBEN.Who ever it is will get BIG numbers!! some stores have there Christmas trees out some BJ'S and all Lowe's do.

I hope that it will sound like Now 97.5 last year or Sunny 104.5 in years past.
I hope it starts on Halloween.
Christmas music was the only reason I listened to 97.5.

Now remember, Nick, any holiday song performed by Jessica Simpson cannot be a Christmas classic! ;)

They're not going to move a DJ over for some temporary stint while Christmas plays. If, and I don't see why Ben would do this year what they haven't in the past, they go all Christmas, keeping her on for the 3 hours a day of the morning show wouldn't make a real difference--no need to create that kind of confusion.

Considering the plummeting ratings of NOW, they will probably do it first, and fairly soon.

As a sign that people are already in the holiday spirit, and the fact that the labels have already started shipping Holiday titles, I've started a Christmas section in the CD store where I work, so I won't have to shift cd's when the product deluge begins.

Have a Holly Jolly Christmas.... :D

You would think 97.5 would do it this year to help out there ratings and they may but I don't think they will.I would love to see it on Halloween but I think its going to be in the first 2 weeks of November when one starts all Christmas music.I think it might be B101 to jump on it first to try and beat 97.5 at it.but I don't think 97.5 is going to do it at all this year last year they where a B101 clone this year they are not.if 97.5 does do it I think it would be on Halloween.

Wasn't Wilmington's WJBR also in the mix (although I can't remember if they started before Thanksgiving)?

The interesting thing about NOW 97.5 last year was that they started on Halloween and they were a new station, so they needed to draw some attention. I don't think any Philly station ever started that early before. So now that the station has more or less established itself, they may not need to go in this direction unless they plan on building a reputation as Philly's reliable Christmas station much as Sunny used to be.

Adding to the point made by tommygraser, a year ago all-Christmas seemed to be a good fit in NOW's new younger approach to Soft AC. But judging from the times I've tuned in, they've migrated away from that to the point where Christmas music just wouldn't match their image as it does on B101, WJBR, or WOGL.

Is everyone forgetting about the fantastic job WHAT did with Classic Christmas music, they might be the only way to go this year for me if NOW does not do it. There was no comparison between the garbage on B, OGL and JBR compared to the great stuff NOW programmed last Christmas but that PD is long gone....but NOW might put it on their HD-2 or the B could do it also, and there is always Satellite...

I predict 97.5 will go on November 1. Ratings are completely in the toilet for the regular format.

If CBS plans to flip WYSP to something completely different at the beginning of 2010, they may go with Christmas tunes for November and December too.

You're absolutely correct. It was just unfortunate that I could listen to WHAT only when I was on the computer. They would probably be a major player on FM.

Well, let's see if the Phillies win another World Series - that could provoke 97.5 to make the early switch to Christmas again - plus, they could use all of that Phillies imaging they used last year (e.g. Manuel saying "Christmas has come early this year")...

If it's the World Series parade...or even victory...that provides the excuse for a flip, it won't be Halloween, as the Series can't possibly end until at least November 1, and that's only in the event of a sweep. That said, given the Phils' pitching woes, how many people really, really expect that to be an issue at all?

I think B 101 may have the format to itself this year. BEN gets OK ratings, no need to alienate the core audience there. NOW has gone a completely different direction in format from last year, and the nice bump they got in Christmas ratings left almost as fast as the holiday ended (and I agree, their Christmas playlist was solid - except the Jessica Simpson type stuff). I don't see 97.5 doing it again this year. OGL never did it before, but they could be the surprise station this season. If a "major" station was deciding to flip formats soon, an all Christmas format would be a fun stunt. If no other station does it besides B this year, then I wouldn't expect them to flip until Thanksgiving.

Does anyone remember what sort of ratings the all Christmas Music stations (B-101, WOGL, WJBR, 97.5, etc) got last year while playing all Christmas Music? If all did well ratings and spot wise, then my guess is, they'll do it again, but if it didn't bring the ratings and added spot load, then they might wait till the more traditional timing of gradually adding Christmas music as we get closer and closer to Christmas Day.

I thought OGL flipped last year for the first time. IIRC, the ratings went down from the normal format. Also IIRC, they had their regular oldies format on HD-2.

Maybe 97.5 will put Christmas on their HD-2, I really don't know what type format is on their now some sort of Classic masters, is anyone really listening to it...also did anyone notice WRDW's HD-2 has been gone the last few weeks....

They did go down, but it begs a question: did they go down because of the all-Christmas OR did going that route prevent them from going down further? It's a question ratings numbers alone can't answer.
