Christmas music on 87.9 on the west side

I started listening in car when I got on I-480 eastbound at Clague Rd in North Olmsted. Signal seemed to get even stronger from about Berea Freeway to State Rd where I exited. Signal started to fade as I headed south on State Rd at about Ridgewood.

Someone bought one of those illegal transmitters on eBay. Do you think they know they are pirating? An engineer friend drove across my state tuned to 87.9 and discovered pirates in numerous cities and towns.

In the old days the FCC would find it was an electronic whiz-kid behind the operation. Todays it's an adult who shopped on eBay. Setting up a pirate station today takes no more expertise than hooking up a stereo.

At least it was a nice selection of Christmas tunes, not the same ones we have been hearing over and over since mid-November.

I don't think that the FCC is all that concerned if you set up on 87.7 or 87.9, since there are no other stations on those frequencies. Possibly a station on 88.1 would complain if there is one in the area and the pirate was right next door on 87.9.

WTCL moved to RF channel 20 from RF channel 6 about the same time Gray bought it so there is no interference issue with them.

It's back again playing oldies from the 60s and 70s. Strong signal while driving west on I-480 from around the airport until I exited at Ridge Rd. Signal faded as I headed south on Ridge.

No, La Mega was a TV station that was still broadcasting in analog; it was required to convert to digital, thus no analog audio signal
WOUB-TV's satellite in Cambridge, Ohio, WOUC, claimed RF channel 6 when they were required by the spectrum repack to move to a new frequency. WLFM was not protected from interference because it was low-power and thus had to transmit at a whopping five watts.

Christmas pirates typically pop up all over America on December 24 & 25th. They know engineers are home with their families, no one is at the stations, everything on most stations is completely automated so the engineers are usually not paying attention to the radio. The stations aren't complaining. Especially in areas where there's snow and ice on the roads that makes it too hazardous to drive on. Sometimes a few push their luck and go on broadcasting, but most of them shut down Christmas night. Until next year.....

A shame they only broadcast for a couple days. I was hearing some good tunes... and no commercials.
I understand. But they're also doing something illegal. And they know it.. Most Christmas pirates only exist just in those 48 hours. And they always play Christmas music of some kind. It's a popular thing with churches (Whaddya gonna do? Tell a church what to do?) By 12:01am December 26th, most of them vanish like a Christmas dream.
