Christmas music on 93.1

I've read a number of posts about the possibility of 93.9 playing Christmas music soon in anticipation of a format change, but 93.1 in Indy is playing Christmas music now. To what format will they be switching?

93.1 will be picking up WIBC's News/Talk format after the New Year.

WFNI would be close to 1070 the Fan as the new 1070 will be called but why dump the heritage calls of WIBC when you can you them to market the brand better. WNDE didnt switch its calls to something else when they went talk then to sports in the mid 90's dumping the oldies format

Makes sense...FaN Indiana... I would guess that they are taking the WIBC name to FM and want to make a clean break from their 1070 days...

Why, then, are WEXN FM call letters popping up on my radio's digital readout at 93.1FM6? It made no sense to me, if the IBC calls were moving to the FM for the heritage carry over, to change the calls twice. If these other new calls are going to be used for the Sports AM, are they scuttling the IBC calls altogether to make a clean break on the FM?

They want the calls to be WIBC, not WIBC-FM. If they had applied for WIBC at 93.1, (while 1070 still uses the WIBC calls) the FCC would have assigned WIBC-FM to 93.1. If they change WIBC to WIFN Jan 8, they can apply for WIBC to be placed on 93.1. And all will be well with the Chuck Riley ID.

GREAT OBSERVATION, PT! I couldn’t fathom them discarding that perennial “Chuck Riley TOH-ID”—it IS WIBC personified in about seven-seconds! Unless some digital magic exists that I have yet to witness, that “signature” which is “WIBC”—CANNOT be re-cut [or likely remastered]; hence, their hesitation to HAVE to add that pesky “FM” designation.

So, if I'm following you here, the logic is that, by waiting until January, when they change the calls at the 1070 frequency, 93.1's legal ID can simply be "WIBC," with no "FM" designation?

Yes. If there is only an FM station with the call and not an AM the FM doesn't need the -FM attached (since there would be no confusion between the two). When there is an AM and an FM with the same basic call the AM gets the four letters and the FM is stuck with -FM. (No, you can't have WIBC and WIBC-AM.)

During the second tour of duty for the WNAP calls, the Chuck Riley "wrath of the buzzard" ID said WNAP-FM Indianapolis.

Yep, I remember that and wondered why until I found out that there was (and still is) a WNAP-AM, a small religious station out east somewhere that came along after the old WNAP changed calls. Someone from the station told me that they had to obtain permission from the AM station to make use of the call for the FM, but I don't know if this is true or not or what the "official" rules are in such cases. Just for laughs and giggles, I did a callsign request lookup for the WNAP call at the FCC website and it came back and told me it was unavailable, showing the AM station as holder of the call, which makes me wonder how you actually get the FM version of the callsign and also if it can be used for an LPFM station if it's already issued to both an AM and FM station since LPFM stations use the -LP extension as the legal ID.

Emmis had to secure permission to use the WNAP-FM calls...dollars probably changed hands to get the job done.

Yeah, I heard one of Whitney Houston's classic Christmas songs played on there the other day... ???
