Christmas music vs. winter music

WKIM 98.9 in Memphis changed to all Christmas on 11-1 again. No other changes to any other stations in the Memphis area to my knowledge yet.

If you live there you should know, but I would think that they are like the Holiday Lite in Chicago, where they are the only one that is wall to wall, as other stations might not go wall to wall until at least a few weeks prior to Christmas

Concord Mills, Concord NC. I forgot to notice whether the songs were Christmas or winter songs, but they were more traditional than what I'm used to hearing there.

A Christmas commercial had the 3 Dog Night song. That doesn't count.

WRVR 104.5 in Memphis and WHHM 107.7 in Jackson TN usually change to all Christmas sometime closer to Thanksgiving, but it could be any time if they decide to start sooner this year.

I've heard a version of the Christmas Joy to the World and 3 Dog Night's song that as good but I can't remember who did it.

David to you have the ratings to answer this question?

It helped them a little last year (I am assuming that the station did all Christmas last year) as they over-performed their average 18th place finish by about 50%.

Memphis is obviously a more difficult market for the format as the target audience, which is obviously mostly non-ethinic, is small. Only 44% of the Memphis MSA population is non-Hispanic white. Entercom pretty much owns the AC market there, and with just its two AC stations controls 19% of the market revenues. Cumulus is mostly a bench player in the market, as their two best stations only get about 5% of market billing each with the country and rock formats.

I thought you would be the guy would know or somewhat know the answer to the question, and I would also imagine theat they had to go all Christmas music.

I'm back working at Lowe's again since retiring from UPS, and they have gone all Christmas on their Muzak feed. I think it's probably the Holiday Pop feed. But yesterday I heard a version of I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm. That might be vaguely winter connected but definitely not Christmas, and as usual there were several versions of My Favorite Things.

Although this is slightly off-topic, I don't think Wham!'s "Last Christmas" is really a Christmas song. We could probably create a whole new thread about songs that reference Christmas, but aren't Christmas songs.

At least one seems to be created every November or December. The topic has been discussed to death.

Hi all.I would not mind hearing Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson all winter long..

Now station start playing holiday tunes weeks before Thanksgiving....I don't mind it but some others don't....
Same as stores pushing Black Friday sales weeks before Thanksgiving too..

Pete.

“Lover” by Taylor Swift is in the same category, if you ask me.

I know I hate this topic, but what the heck ... throw in "Do They Know It's Christmas?" (sanctimonious twaddle, since "they" are starving African kids, many not even Christian, whose bellies would be just as empty and futures just as grim if they'd read the KJV cover to cover) and "Same Old Lang Syne" (a touching ode to drinking and driving on Christmas Eve with a confusing New Year's Eve reference and riff worked in).

I've heard Same Old Lang Syne and Celebrate Me Home on small town stations outside the holidays. I.E. in August.
