Christmas Music / What's your favorite?

OK – It’s been a few weeks since WODS and WROR have switched to all Christmas and once again WODS has a very narrow playlist, as does WROR.

In my opinion, the only station in Boston playing decent Christmas music is WKLB. They play a great variety of religious, non-overplayed covers, and originals mixed in with their regular Country programming.

Since WODS & WROR have such a limited playlist, what songs do you think they could add (or play more) to make them a little bit better.

Here’s my list:

• Pogues – Fairytale of New York
• Carlene Carter – Rockin’ Little Christmas
• Southside Johnny The Asbury Jukes – Please Come Home For Christmas
• Karla Bonoff – The First Noel
• Tom Petty – Christmas All Over Again
• Kinks – Father Christmas
• Melissa Etheridge – Happy Xmas (War Is Over)

I like the last 4 on your list. My 2 favorite are the karla bonoff and Melissa tunes. What album can i find the melissa song on? I hear it on the radio occasionally but would like to own that song? thanks

Doing the Juke Joint today I threw in some Christmas blues tunes (Roomful of Blues, Koko Taylor,
Michelle Willson) and even some comedy: Bill Engvall's "Here's Your Christmas Sign" and Stan
Freberg's "Green Chri$tma$"

In the past I was known to play:
The Irish Rovers, "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer". A Canadian 45 (Attic records); I liked this
version of the Elmo and Patsy tune

Rash of Stabbings, "A Christmas Song". Name of this local rock band may have raised eyebrows
("Rash of Stabbings in Providence!") but a neat tune about the true meaning of the holiday

A neat 12 inch extended version of Band Aid's "Do They Know
It's Christmas?"--a dance remix including literally phoned in messages from Paul McCartney, David
Bowie, and Stu Adamson from Big Country (in Scottish accent: "Feed th' peopill! Stay aloyve...")
ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR! Feed the worrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrld....

My X-Mas show will be 12/24. I only do a show with holiday music once a year and mix it in with the regular stuff I play. Here's my list from last year. It's from a message board where I post, so there are a few comments after it

"I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" by Gayla Peevey.

Also, can never get enough of the Pretenders "2000 Miles".

"Dominick the Donkey" by Lou Monte is ok, but only in moderation (it's an Italian thing).

Not that I expect either WODS or WROR to play it,"X'Mas time(It Sure Doesn't Feel Like It)"covered By the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
Only WFNX & WBCN would probably play it.I bought it on iTunes because I like it so much.
It would be even cooler to play this year with Filenes basement now closed.

I personally like:

Bob Rivers - 12 Pains of Christmas
Band-Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas?
Bryan Adams - Christmas Time
Bob Seger - Little Drummer Boy
Stevie Nicks - Silent Night
Whitney Houston - Do You Hear What I Hear?
Boney M - Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord
Mannheim Steamroller - Deck the Halls, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, We Three Kings
Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24, Christmas Canon
John Tesh Project - Carol of the Bells

…and many others.

My day of WMBR's "Lost & Found" '60s/'70s show fell on Christmas in 2003. This was my playlist:

The Electric Prunes - Angus Dei (Lamb Of God Grant Us Peace)
The Bee Gees - Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You
Procol Harum - A Christmas Camel
Cream - Wrapping Paper
Cream - Take It Back (for the day after)
Tom Lehrer - A Christmas Carol
The Smothers Brothers - Santa Claus (Is Dead)
Mott The Hoople - Death May Be Your Santa Claus
Martin Mull - Santa Doesn't Cop Out On Dope
Roy Buchanan - The Messiah Will Come Again
Johnny Winter - Please Come Home For Christmas
John Mayall - Chrismas '71 (sic)
Leon Russell - Slipping Into Christmas
Jethro Tull - A Christmas Song
Arlo Guthrie - The Pause Of Mr. Claus

great list Eli... also, "It Sure Doesn't Feel Like Christmas" was a song the Bosstones covered. It was originally by the Dogmatics.

I know this probably won't get a lot of airplay on Christmas radio stations outside of Maine, but Melinda Liberty's song: CHRISTMASTIME IN MAINE is definitely a nice alternative to DECK THE HALLS & SILVER BELLS! ;)

DECK THE HALLS
Speaking of Deck the Halls,Smokey Robinson does a cool version of this, which I doubt we would here if stations weren't into Xmas music full time for over a month.

MEA CULPA!

I also forgot to mention The House On Christmas Street which was written, produced and recorded by Judy Michaels (aka Judy Pancoast).

Judy is a very talented musician from New Hampshire. She also works as a part-time on-air personality! 8)

Judy isn't JUST a part-time on-air personality - she's an Oldies 103.3 Weekend Warrior! ooh-rah!

the alvin and the chipmunks song has to go. everytime i hear that, which is quie often on ods, i feel like jabbing knitting needles in my ear.

A few songs I miss this side of the pond, which were hits, and familiar in England..

Wizard - I Wish it Could be Christmas Everyday!
Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody.
Gladys Knight and The Pips - Do You Hear What I Hear?
Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone.

The Power of Love - Frankie Goes to Hollywood ( and their third consecutive number one in England, the second band to have their first three hits hit the top of the UK chart!) And somewhere among my 45s I still have to picture cover which featured three wise men!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zARg_K4jRhA&feature=related

is from Top of The Pops!

Others worthy mentions

Boney M - Mary's Boy Child
Johnny Mathis - When a Child is Born!

Merry Christmas

1. Rock & Roll Christmas (Ron Dante)
2. Christmas in New York (Lou Christie)
3. Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer (Tommy Roe)
4. Jingle Bell Rock (Gary Lewis)
5. Home For The Holidays (Bobby Vee)
6. Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree (Chris Montez)
7. Shine Your Light On Me (Ron Dante)
8. O Holy Night
9. Holly Jolly Christmas (Gary Lewis)
10. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (Ron Dante)
11. Peace On Earth (Bobby Vee)
12. The Christmas of Our Lives (Ron Dante)

Ron wrote and contributed a few originals of the above titles. it's a very Cool Yule album. especially Lou Christie with that great falsetto reach on Christmas In New York

also fun and notable for the holidays...

Freddy Cannon's "Have A Boom Boom Christmas"

and i really love Ringo Starr's "Little Drummer Boy," complete with a vintage "Back Off Boogaloo" back-beat
