Christmas Music

Given the huge ratings impact of Christmas music this year more that other years, will other stations make the move next year? Seems a natural for stations like KBSG, KPLZ and maybe one of the Country stations. Even conservative talk stations might benefit. Each year KRWM gets bigger. Just wondering. Seems a great way to get some new audience.

This market is out of parameter when it comes to the effect of Christmas music. Several Clear
Channel stations many HOT-AC and Oldies and all in formats outside of AC and Christian adopted the all-Christmas format a couple of years ago. They were not successful, because it is outside the listener parameter of expectation for
other formats. Should another soft AC appear on the market landscape, it could easily go to an
all-Christmas approach which would split the audience. I believe this year was abnormal in the effect of Christmas
music on the final trend. There may be more at work here, only a diary analysis will provide the answers.

Based on Fall's numbers the market could sustain another soft-ac. This was an abnormally high
effect for Christmas music, but if you look December to December, you see a strong pattern over
the last three or four years of KRWM and KCMS getting giant books. It is big each year, this December
it was gigantic. Enough to make someone flip? Time will tell.

DJDan...wouldn't "smart" ad agencies KNOW that they are not getting those
December numbers when their clients ads run in March and April?
Seems to me the Christmas numbers would only beneft advertisers who buy
December.

sales types will use whatever they can to get them loowwww rates :-X
That is why the four-book DJ dan loves is so stupid cause it means nothing.
WARM looks great on a four-book and the only got numbers in Nov, Dec, Jan
from X=-mas music  Screws up the rest of the markets four books for female
leaning countries like WOLF, STAR, KBSG and the list goes on. Forget the
four book dudes :-\

Wouldn't think so. There is NOTHING more socialist than a jolly old man who only works one day a year and gives toys away for free just for being good and peaceful.

You need to give a very good reason as to why listeners should switch from a tradition (christmas music on KWRM) to come to a different station.

Like when WOLF was flipped into the market listeners gave it a try for a while, music not to much different from KMPS. So they reverted back to what they were used to. (reason behind wolf spike in ratings, then drop off)

As far as christmas ratings, the music is not played all year round on a tight rotation (Like at KUBE, KBKS, ect.) so its not over saturated in the market. therefore people like it.

Why would sales types want low rates? Quite the opposite...management is usually pushing to get the highest rate possible. Agencies are the ones pushing not so much for low rates but low CPPs and are also the ones who generally decide which book or averages on which they'll be basing the buy. Sales would simply prefer to use whichever book or average makes them look the best.
