I wonder if that was too early? Last year, didn't B98 start playing Christmas music right after Thanksgiving? Could this be a precursor to a format change after the holidays?
No. Everyone is starting earlier. We have 2 stations in Northwest Arkansas that have switched Magic 107.9 and Warm 94.9. I think they are trying to get Christmas advertising quickly and get people in stores. Don't think B98.5 will have a format change.
I don't know how it's doing today, but B-98.5 used to be Citadel's big cash cow. It used to rank in the top-3, usually right behind KSSN, and it even outbilled the much higher-rated Power 92 not long ago. I can't imagine B-98.5 going anywhere.
Curious: if they're the only AC in the market but are now playing all Christmas, where do AC listeners get their music? Seems like another invitation to forget radio and go with online or personal program devices.
Another station went full time Christmas in the Hot Springs market: KIXV 101.5 went from The Spur (country music) to "Santa 101.5". There's even a FB page. http://www.facebook.com/Santa1015
I would not be surprised. Speaking of Christmas-time format changes 25 years ago this Christmas is when KIPR 92.3 (ex KFXE) made its flip from Country music to Urban/HipHop/R&B in 1987 as "Power 92". KIPR was a sister station at the time of the late KOTN (1490 AM) Pine Bluff AR.
As of this morning was hearing Christmas music on KWAK-AM translator K274BX 102.7 (b/c of tropo enhancement). The oldies format formerly on 105.5/102.5 on KWAK-FM/KOTN went to classic country earlier this year, but the oldies formatted stations on AM 1240 and FM 102.7 continue the tradition of going all Christmas for the season but a bit early this year. Just checked the 1240 frequency and hearing Christmas music.
