Christmas Music

I can't stand it.. I know it's a marketing and sales move and bla bla bla but ar this rate in 10 years we're going to be listening stations switching to Christmas in July.

Counting rimshots, we've got 96.9, 98.1, 99.5, 100.7, and 101.1 all offering up Christmas music. Sampling while I'm driving, More sounds so sleepy with their tight playlist compared to, say, 100.7. I thought the whole "More" rebranding was supposed to energize the stodgy ol' B? *cue request for Sunny 104.5 holiday stream*

This is not much of a sales move because, in general, the stations that do all-Christmas are already established major stations. They would already do well with Christmas related accounts and likely can't get much more revenue out of the season.

As far as marketing, this is a way for female targeted stations to reinforce their image and to get increased sampling which may bleed over into the next year. Not doing it allows some other station to seize the opportunity to steal cume.

The holiday music always changes the sound. You can't ignore how the rebrand was meant to work the other 10.5 months in the big picture. It was an image--much as they did when they moved from EZ to B, the music and sound had already morphed, the brand then caught up. Largely the same with the B to More--the branding caught up with what had been happening anyway.

I don't think I'm straying that far O/T by asking how the 'Holiday' format does in places such as Jacksonville, New Orleans, Tampa, Houston, Phoenix, San Diego, etc. -- the warmer places. Is whatever revenue and ratings derived in those markets with that format equivalent, percent-wise, to that of the northern stations?

And what kind of numbers show up in the book for that format where oranges and cacti grow? I don't remember ever seeing a warm-climate Holiday book.

Tia.

Back in 2008, Philly had three all-Christmas stations: B-101(as it was then known), WOGL, and the ill-fated Now 97.5(which is now all-sports as the Fanatic).
