Christmas Music

Maybe some country stations might want to try an all-country Christmas format where they play only Christmas songs from country artists past and present ("Your favorite holiday songs performed by your favorite country artists past and present. This is 'Christmas Country'!").

I'm surprised that as far as I know, no country station has tried this. Maybe KKGO-105.1 in the Los Angeles area should try an all-country Christmas format if they go all-Christmas this year.
SXM has a Country Christmas channel each year.

I mentioned that earlier, I think, though it may have been on one of the 50 other Christmas music threads in progress right now. The channel has a tight playlist, just as terrestrial pop/standards stations do, but the artists, of course, are all country. It occupies Prime Country's channel for about three weeks in December.

For me, music radio (listening) is a mostly passive leisure activity - the operators of the 12 FM music radio stations I listen to do the heavy lifting of maintaining the infrastructure and evaluating songs for possible radio play, I just turn on my car radio, tap a selector button and the music (I generally like) begins to play.

I could set up playlists with the various streaming services, but that's dangerously close to real work (I did get my 1st smartphone about 1 month ago, but I selected the lowest monthly data plan so streaming is only a viable option when using my home WiFi with my smartphone).

I'm not a big Country fan but have found their Christmas channel a welcome retreat from the pop or classic XMAS endless loop of the same songs I've heard over the past forty years. (Waitresses, Bing, or Mariah Carey) That said; once a country singer starts twanging Rudolf, that's the time I change to something completely different.

In general, I enjoy the variety of channels, some of them streaming only, on satellite for some variety. I typically find even Holly, the "mainstream" pop channel, tends to have a bit more variety than a typical radio station, without going so far afield as to make it unfamiliar. But I've also, depending on mood, listened to their Jolly, Rockin' Christmas, 70s/80s Christmas and some other channels, at least for some stretches of time.

Mostly, though, I use my own playlist--none of the personally annoying tunes from the stable of classics plus ones that have a particular meaning or appeal to me. 'Tis a wonderful world with the technology to do exactly what we want.

>>>Maybe some country stations might want to try an all-country Christmas format where they play only Christmas songs from country artists past and present.<<<

Well, let's remember that in the days just before Christmas, most Country stations play both Country and standard Christmas songs mixed with their regular Country playlists. You hear an occasional Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Carpenters and Andy Williams holiday song, especially Dec. 24th and 25th. So I doubt any Country station that wanted to go all-Christmas would limit itself to only Country artists.

I've always wondered why everyone uses virtually the same Christmas playlist, whether the other 10 months of the year they are AC, Hot AC, Classic Hits or some other format. Hot AC stations don't eliminate the Burl Ives and Dean Martin songs in favor of Mariah Carey and N Sync. Classic Hits stations don't play more Beach Boys, Motown and Elvis Christmas songs than other Christmas stations. And as I said above, KKGO Los Angeles doesn't play any extra Country artists in its Christmas playlist than would be heard on KOST.

But in a market where there are two or three Country stations, hey, one should give it a shot. Maybe 80% Country artists and 20% traditional artists, all doing Christmas songs, when the AC station in town has gone with its usual Christmas playlist. Maybe that would combat Country ratings erosion in December and Holiday ratings?

"Ave Maria" is on Serenade Radio now. No reason. Probably means nothing.
Though Ave Maria (meaning "Hail Mary" in English) is sometimes heard around the holidays, at least a few versions of it are actually (primarily) Catholic hymns. In the Catholic Church you're more likely to hear Ave Maria sung in May rather than during the Christmas holiday, as that entire month is used to honor Mary. You might also hear it sung during more traditional Catholic weddings. In this case, as you stated, it probably means nothing as it relates to timing of "Christmas music".

There's also a Beyonce song based on the Schubert melody, but with different, generally secular, lyrics. That may be what Serenade Radio was playing.
