Dxtrfan, what are the newscasts in your area being preempted for?

Christmas specials for the most part in place of newscasts and on WFXR which uses WSLS newscasters the morning news 7am-9am will be replaced with a non Christmas movie The Devil Wears Prada and a double run of The Simpsons in place of the 10pm news. WDBJ will air an additional showing of the CBS Morning News at 6:30am. WXII will air Dick Van Dyke at 4:30am.

In the Mobile, Alabama-Pensacola, Florida TV market...

WALA-TV, WKRG-TV, and WEAR-TV have plans to broadcast alternate programs in time periods normally reserved for local newscast between now and Christmas Day (not all local newscasts for Christmas Day have been pre-empted by those stations). Select the call letters for more details.

In the Twin Cities, KARE will only do news at 6 and 10. KSTP will do morning newscasts and at 10(drive time news from 4:30-7 preempted for Durant-Lebron). No preemptions planned for WCCO and KMSP

Looks like the CBS affiliates in my area, WROC-TV Rochester and WIVB Buffalo, aren't doing morning or noon news on Tuesday, and no 4 PM news on WROC either. WIVB is doing religious specials in the morning and at noon; WROC is showing a movie in the morning, a religious special at noon and a repeat of its Winter Ready special at 4. Regular news on both at 5, 6 and 11, and throughout the day on the ABC stations in both markets, save for the early-evening ABC basketball preemption. Regular news all day on WHEC (NBC) here in Rochester; WGRZ in Buffalo blows out morning, noon and 5 PM for local specials ("Making a Difference," "Stories 2 Touch Your Heart") but does local news at 6 and 11, and at 10 on My49.

Over in Syracuse, there's no morning news at all, with local specials running on WSTM (NBC) and sister station WTVH (CBS) as well as on WSYR-TV (ABC). WSYR-TV has the only noon news on a normal day, and it's pre-empted for a special, too. WSTM/WTVH are doing a stripped-down early-evening instead of their usual separate 5 and 6 PM shows, with local news at 5 on WSTM (with a special on WTVH) and at 6 on WTVH (with a special on WSTM). WSTM has its usual 10 PM show on WSTQ (CW) and WSTM and WTVH have separate 11 PM shows. WSYR's lone newscast of the day is at 11; they're not even doing the usual 10 PM show on the 9.2 subchannel.

in Philly:
Channel 6 WPVI will have no 4:30-7 AM, noon, 5-6:30 PM newscasts.
Channel 10 WCAU will have no 11 AM and 5 to 6 PM news
Channel 29: no 4:25-6 AM Good Day Newscast, no 5 PM news, 10 PM news shortened to 30 minutes.

Let me know If I made any errors or missed something.

In Houston:

KPRC (NBC) - All newscasts air as scheduled
KHOU (CBS) - No morning or noon news
KTRK (ABC) - No 4, 5, or 6pm news (pre-empted by NBA)
KRIV (Fox) - All newscasts air as scheduled
KIAH (CW) - All newscasts (they only do 5 & 9pm) air as scheduled

correction. no 4-5 PM news on WCAU on Christmas day. 5-6 PM news will air as scheduled.

In Chicago, WGN-TV will only do their morning news from 6-7am, instead of their usual 4-9am news. They also will only do the midday news from 11am - noon (this portion not seen on WGN America), & in place of the second hour, they're airing Bozo's Circus, the lost tape from noon - 1pm (not sure if this will be shown on WGN America or not). They'll have their regular programming after Bozo's Circus The Lost Tape, including their 5 & 9 pm newscasts (5pm not shown on WGN America)

WLS-TV will be on the network feed after Windy City Live is over at 10am, & won't have their 11am, 4, 5, or 6pm newscasts.

All other stations are having their usual newscasts, & programs.

^WGN America was set to broadcast "Bozo's Circus: The Lost Tape" along with WGN-TV on Christmas Day between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. Central time, according to the news release about the program on the official World Wide Web site for WGN-TV and the official Facebook page for WGN-TV.

In Atlanta and the rest of the South I would not be surprised to see these plans for preemption get blown up at least somewhat because of a rare tornado outbreak forecast for tomorrow.

I wouldn't anticipate any ABC affiliate in the Eastern or Central
time zones having an early newscast (4, 5, or 6 PM) because of
the NBA; Mountain and Pacific stations may be another story.

Also, CBS is going with its regular daytime lineup of "The Price Is
Right," "The Young And The Restless," "The Bold And The Beautiful,"
"The Talk," and "Let's Make A Deal" (time, of course, depending on
your market), so there's not much reason for CBS affiliates to pre-empt
their 5 and 6 PM newscasts. To the person who mentioned Roanoke and
Greensboro, yes, WFMY is pre-empting the "Good Morning Show" and its
noon newscast (for "2 Those Who Care" at noon), but everything else--
including Andy Griffith and Ellen DeGeneres--will be on. One switch is
that WRAL will air "The Young And The Restless" in pattern at 12:30 instead
of the usual 4 PM; it is rerunning the Raleigh Christmas parade at 4, but I don't
think the station's 5-6:30 news block is affected.

NBC should hardly be affected, since it has only one show after the "Today" show,
and that's "Days Of Our Lives," which is on tomorrow. My NBC affiliate, WNCN, has
its usual block of talk (Jeff Probst, Anderson, and Ellen) and "Judge Judy," from 2 to 6,
with its 6 and 7 PM newscasts as usual.

WPMI-TV had planned on following their regular newscast schedule on Christmas Day in the Mobile, Alabama-Pensacola, Florida TV market unlike the other stations mentioned in my previous post.

I just noticed that, even if not pre-empting newscasts, several stations are airing Christmas music specials with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and whatnot, mostly during the wee-hours, and sometimes pre-empting the local morning newscasts. I believe these specials were originally on PBS, so I wonder how commercial stations got permission to air them.
