Christmas on KIXI

I am really enjoying the offbeat selection of Christmas music that KIXI 880 has been playing. Over the last hour....

Merry Twist-mas - The Marcels
Christmas Roses - Frankie Laine/Jo Stafford
Silent Night - Elvis Presley
Dig That Crazy Santa Claus - Brian Seltzer and his Orchestra
Sleigh Ride - The Ventures
Christmas All Over The World - Sammy Davis Jr.
Good King Wenceslas - Crouch End Festival Chorus
Christmas In My Hometown - Charlie Pride

My Christmas Radio fantasy is to be at a station that still has a wall full of original LPs, and sample thru the Christmas albums on air for a couple hours that big name singers and groups, and a few lesser known ones, had released over the years. Nice way to tap into the nostalgia the holidays stimulate, and share the fun of exploring the treasures in 'the attic' with listeners.
The KIXI playlist sounds like it comes close. Just wish they could have some personalities to pull it together. And that they'd stop overmodulating their AM signal so it doesn't 'rumble' on every radio on which I've ever tried to listen to it. When I've heard standards on a good FM signal, it was a revelation, and familiar songs took on a whole new fresh ambience.

Sounds like there is some cool stuff in the mix. And true to KIXI, it’s Christmas classics. Probably immune to Mariah Carey too.
I'm not sure that would be the case. The standards station in Charlotte, way more conservative than almost anything on commercial radio, did play her. I only heard her when a co-owned station revived the format in 2020 to return to the air just long enough to not be silent so it could be sold.

I don't know if they ever went all-Christmas because I had to drive west to hear it, and when I was still driving, Christmas songs were played several times an hour.

I was once on a commuter train sitting by the window. We approached a stop, and a homeless woman took the seat next to me. For the next 30 minutes, that person proceeded to sing “All I Want For Christmas” by Mariah Carey (loud enough that the entire train could enjoy the concert). Mind you, this is the month of July and few folks were likely to be in the Christmas spirit.

Now that song gives me a very visceral and emotional reaction when I hear it. Nice vocal gymnastics by Mariah though.

Hey, this is a fun news alert! Glad some people are enjoying the music this year on KIXI. I grew up down in Olympia and have always been in this market so I'm super steeped in the Christmas in the NW, Bob Rivers stuff, I added in Pearl Jam's Let Me Sleep last year to the holiday mix and I'm really digging hearing that on the radio too.

The Ventures holiday album is amazing, just like the Brian Setzer that was already named is. I'm looking at my old signed copy of I Am Santa Claus right now in my office which I really wrestled with myself if I should some of those tracks put into rotation this year... maybe next year. Not sure if the general KIXI audience is ready for that.

I've always liked the unique feel of northwest artists so I always try to float that up as much as I can. I've fought to keep certain tracks in like Ballin' Jack's Found a Child for years and I'll keep fighting for it. Offbeat is a perfect way to frame what I'm shooting for.

Stop the Calvary is a particular holiday love of mine so I'm happy that was shouted out as a postive in the programming this year! - Seth

Is there a story of how that "Stop the Calvary" tradition began on Seattle radio? Perhaps through another station other than KRWM? I don't think the Cory Band has any Seattle heritage...

107.7 in the early/mid 90's maybe? With their lean into new wave after the big 1991 flip I want to say that Calvary and Fairytale of New York were spun pretty heavy during the holidays.

For 'Saturday Night Soundwaves' this weekend, any chance of Christmas music by Yacht Rock artists?

I used to be a headphone connoisseur. Then I started taking King County Metro to work daily…the Grados came off and a $50 pair of noise-canceling headphones were put on. Made the ride on the 358 bus way more pleasant. Sound quality be damned…I just don’t want to hear any sound from the person next to me.

I once was considering noise-cancelling headphones, so I asked my partner which brand were the best. Now I’m single.

Totally! I've been collecting holiday tunes for that but I didn't want to lean too hard on Kenny Loggins' holiday stuff which is great but kinda low hanging fruit. I feel like I have a nice batch ready to roll now.

Some x-mas tunes on KIXI that I am hearing for the 1st time that are pretty cool ..

Run Rudolph Run - Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas - The Emotions
Jingle Bells - Count Basie and his Orchestra (now my favorite version)
A Willie Nice Christmas - Willie Nelson, Kacey Musgraves
And a super nice version of Do You Hear What I Hear by Neil Diamond...great stuff!

So far, no Mariah! 😃

I got a kick out of hearing...(Just Another) Wet Seattle Christmas by the Double Tall Skinny Singers. Haven't heard that one in a loooong time! Thanks for playing it.

I used to love KIXI's 88 Hours of Christmas. I do like their Christmas music. Also KING-FM's HD-3 which is all Christmas classical, 24/7.
