Christmas On WROR

Looks like WROR is going head-to-head with WODS. 24-7 Christmas before Thanksgiving!! I wonder who will win the raitings war?

As noted in another thread, 'ROR and 'ODS did indeed flip to all-Yule today. And of course they'll
get good ratings and ad billing, though some of us will take them off our pre-sets. Christmas is
fine but it's getting shoved down our throats. There are 2 S'x in Chri$tma$ and they're both dollar
signs, as Stan Freberg once said.

Here it is the observed Veteran's Day and instead of paying tribute to our soliders, it's Santa who rules.

Oh how boring!! Boston radio has become even more monotonous that it was before - and who would have thought that possible? ::)

Looks like I'll be straining to listen to North Shore 104.9 on my trip up there next week!!!!

Wow, could these 2 stations be much more alike? First they both use the slogan "Boston's Greatest Hits" and now this. I wonder what will happen after Christmas? Maybe WROR will start using jingles again?

Face it~

There will always be PRO-CHRISTMAS LISTENERS :D and HUMBUG HOLIDAY MUSIC SCROOGES!

The alternatives are radio stations that don't play this type of music...a personal CD of your own...or a book on tape!

Seasonal music isn't for everybody....unless they happen to be trapped in a supermarket or at WALMART! ;D

time to change the settings on the radio dial until January

Slight update:

WROR has updated its website to mention the change and some of the artists featured, and they claim to be "the most fun place" for Christmas songs. They plan to run it "all day and night through Christmas day."

And for the kids:

"Weeknights from 6 to 8, we'll link up to the North Pole and let kids call 617-931-1057 to talk to Santa."

That might be fun, for the kids, and some adults, too. Not the first time a station's ever done this - I remember Santa explaining to a kiddo that maybe he shouldn't have the puppy he was asking for because his little brother might not know how to act around a dog.

Talk about a fun "Santa Claus Gig" ;D

I remember being one of Santa's helpers for a radio station several years ago. Not only did the concept work, but the advertisers came in droves to buy the show!

Sometimes...the corniest radio programming ideas can generate some unexpected profits! ;)

I 'd have thought that WROR would have stayed with their regular format to keep and attract the Oldies/Classic Hits listeners who didn't want to hear all Christmas music on WODS. I guess the books will tell whether or not they're shooting themselves in the foot this year by doing this.

I expect that, in the areas where people can hear them, WBOQ Beverly and WATD Marshfield may get small ratings bumps from the people who still want to hear '60s/'70s pop oldies on the radio for the next month plus. Where else on the local terrestrial dial will people be able to hear them in the area?

Yes, the pity is that both stations of the same basic format have chosen to go all Christmas...for 2 months! Call me Scrooge, but it's excessive and I don't appreciate having the type of music that I enjoy being displaced for this - on BOTH stations.

One station is plenty and I wish that it was a station that I didn't listen to and, thus wouldn't miss. Such as Magic.

Hey here's an idea: why not all Christmas on WBOS instead of WROR? Judging from their ratings, it can only help! In the meantime, it'll be WBOQ for me.

Here's my guess: WODS always goes all-Christmas and pulls monster shares, while at the other two stations that have given all-Christmas a one-year spin - WQSX and WMJX - ended up hurting Magic and quite possibly signaled the end of Star. Greater Media wanted to pull some of CBS' Christmas numbers, but didn't want to hurt their signature property Magic or the post-move success of WKLB, where Christmas might have fit well. Alas, WROR.

I think it's safe to say that WBOS listeners would hate the Christmas music rotation on 103.3 or 105.7. But if Greater Media was planning to blow up the station after Christmas to go with a female-friendly format, it would have made for a great stunt. With GM's new Charlotte cluster bringing WLNK 107.9 into the fold, perhaps there's a possibility for some elements of the hot AC/talk hybrid to be incorporated onto 92.9 eventually - it would fit quite well with their other stations.

Not as good of a fit format-wise, and it would send their listeners scrambling to their competition WXRV, which is exactly what they don't want to happen.

I don't understand how this is a win for WROR. Are they going to play classic rock Christmas? If not, how are they building a listenership?

Would a steakhouse switch to turkey and dressing during the holidays? Would a clothing store start selling sleds? It's one thing to sell your stuff with a Christmas theme, but a classic rock station playing Mel Torme?

What does this do to the station for the long term?

WROR is hardly classic rock these days. Especially over the last few months, WROR is now very similar to WODS, just with more 80s music.

Agreed It just turns them into an ODS wannabe I would have waited until the Friday AFTER Thanksgiving.

WROR's HD-2 "Nothing But The '70s" channel has been off the air for the past few days as well, so that's not even an option at this time...

Christmas radio already playlist's or as I call it C.R.A.P. for short, seem's to be a nationwide problem.Chicago just blew up WCKG(CBS) and toyed with the all xmas format until it could figure out a new format. It's competitor decided to move up it's all xmas playlist's even sooner do to WCKG's move.WCKG then scrapped the xmas music idea and instead launched it's "FRESH" format.Sound's like the name of a new feminine hygeine product!People let's stop the madness!Let's take back the holiday's from the corporate machine's and enjoy them one at a time in their proper order. Also let's support radio that employ's REAL PEOPLE and not robot "JACK" station's with the same automated playlist's!C'mon Boston,if you can kick ass on the football and baseball field you can help save Christmas!!! http://www.PetitionOnline.com/wewillru/petition.html

Well, I guess my poorly stated point was to stick X-Mas on 92.9 and then come back on December 26th with a new format.

On a personal note, I admire the fact that WROR is actually using the word “Christmas”. For that reason alone, I may listen to my Christmas music exclusively on WROR.
