Christmas Radio 2008

They say this year will be the biggest ever for the Christmas music format:

http://www.hear2.com/2008/10/christmas-music.html

How? I'm not sure. During the 2001 recession, it was comfort music. In THIS recession, with everybody being laid off with no money, it's gonna be damn tight.

Will the elves arrive at KRWM earlier than ever this year (seems like they start earlier every year anyway)? Will other Seattle stations abandon their formats for a holiday stunt?

Stay tuned......

But at least you have a house. Many this year will find out what it's like to celebrate Christmas without a home.

True....

Very true.

Often forgotten are sales people. While others may lose jobs, salespeople lose clients, revenue and commissions. Those who keep their jobs are working harder for less.

Yeah, not to mention gruel! Gruel is the shizz! I'm waiting for my local buffet to start carrying the stuff!

mmm! Gruel! ;D

Reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Bart goes to Kamp Krusty "Kamp Krusty's Imitation Gruel - 9 out of 10 Orphans Can't Tell The Difference!"

But back to the topic, Is KRWM getting itchy to start the Holiday music? Will KAFE and KXXO follow suit? Will KMPS revive it's all country Christmas music? Or KKWF?

Oooh! Country Christmas. That would be very cool. I think I recall KMPS doing that a number of years ago. I think they do a delivered 24 hours of Christmas show from Nashville. I think the month of December could be cool for KMPS to go that way.

Well, St. Louis went Christmas already (WMVN 101.1) and I see Pittsburgh already went Christmas this weekend (WWSW 94.5), though reported to be a stunt (aren't they all.)

I have a strange feeling after Halloween, the fat is going straight into the fire with Christmas music radio around the nation this year......

I've been following this thread and I just can't get excited about christmas music yet. At some point? Yeah. But mid-October? Man I am just not into it yet.....and Costco was dragging out their christmas stuff before Labor Day. Jeeeez. I think the holiday lends itself to some interesting and perhaps innovative programming and promotional ideas. But I ain't ready for Bing Crosby, not ready for Cheech & Chong either.

"Santa And His Old Lady".....now THERE'S a classic I wish KRWM would play this year!

I've poked in online on this station - oddly, they still seem to have advertisers. As it's already been announced, this station will be ESPN Radio 101.1 as of January 1. I guess that will be a shock to some of the listeners but gives the cluster a chance of scraping some revenue out of Q4.

So given our industry snapshot this year should we re-cut the classics...
thinking stuff like "Our nuts are roasting on an open fire..."

Our nuts roasting on an open fire
Pink slips coming down like snow
Yuletide carols, now the format on the radio
And downsized people dressed like hobos

Everybody knows, some turkeys, otherwise known as CEOs
Had to go and make this season tight
Radio stocks, with their values at zero
Will be used as their TP tonight

They know that oblivion's here to stay
They're taking lots of bonuses and golden parachutes, by the way
And every downsized jock, from music to talk,
Would really like to teach them all how to fly

And so I'm offering, this satirical prose
Even though I hate to say I told you so
Like I've said, many times, in infinate ways
Radio industry...f--- you

This early partially because they are dumpin' the Movin' format and going all-sports on January 1st.

Bongwater, I don't know what you're smoking but your poetry gets TWO THUMBS UP from me.

I just made that up off the cuff in ten minutes. LBB threw me a bone and I ran with it......
