Christmas Songs That Aren't

Not sure if this topic comes up once a year, but how do you feel about songs relegated to holiday airplay just because they refer to Christmas? I'm talking about songs that were original top 10 hits intended to be regular songs but given annual spins during the holiday season.

The biggest example is Dan Fogelberg's "Same Old Lang Syne" - whose title refers to the New Year's holiday! If I had my druthers, this would be played during only the final week of the year.

Dolly Parton's "Hard Candy Christmas" would also qualify. Nary a mention of Santa or mistletoe.

And if you really wanna split hairs, we can add all the versions of "Sleigh Ride" and "Winter Wonderland" to the list.

"My Favorite Things."

"Jingle Bells" was originally written as a Thanksgiving-Onset of Winter song.

And I disagree about Same Old Lang Syne. Yes, the song's title and the sax at the end do suggest New Years, but the entire song is a story that takes place on Christmas Eve, no different than The Night Before Christmas.

Kenny Loggins "Celebrate Me Home". Just saw him in concert, and he said he didn't think of it as a Christmas song until radio stations started spinning it during the Christmas season.

"A Marshmallow World". Smooth as silk in the 40's in its original version by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters. Got the Wall of Sound treatment in the 60's on "A Christmas Gift for You", the Phil Spector Xmas album.

"I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm". Tony Bennett had a good version of this ballad in the mid-60's.

"The Bells of St. Mary's". Fits in perfectly on "A Christmas Gift for You".

"March of the Wooden Soldiers". An unsung classic that's also on the Phil Spector Xmas album.

"This One's for the Children". A top-10 hit for New Kids on the Block in late '89.

do we have just a little too much time on our hands or what?????????

I've always thought of "The Marvelous Toy", written by Tom Paxton, as a Christmas song, even though there is no mention of that holiday within the tune.
