Christmas starts on WODS-hd3

Johnny Mathis - Do You Hear What I Hear is on as I type this, then a JAM jingle singing "103.3 (Boston!) W-O-D-S!" just played into Mannheim Steamroller - Deck The Halls. Since Amp Radio is new and trying to get ratings, I suppose this is where the all Christmas format has landed for CBS Radio/Boston this year. ...Now back to HD2 for Back To The '80s Friday Night :)

Isn't a little early for WODS HD3 to start playing christmas music. I mean why start holiday music before halloween, they should've started playing it in Mid-November. Just my opinion.

If WODS HD3 does holiday music this year, will Amp Radio also play christmas music or continue to play Top 40?

"Christmas has a significance, a meaning!"
"A sales curve! Wake up Cratchit, it's later thank you think!"
"I know, Mr. Scrooge. I know."
(Jingle, tune of 12 Days of Christmas): "On the first day of Christmas the advertising's there/
With newspaper ads, billboards too, business Christmas cards/ And commercials on a pear tree!"

What Stan said in 1960 is true today..they're doing it for money. There is nothing quite as beautiful as money, as Monty Python once put it. It may have started as a creative way to do a format change and hey, maybe it'll catch on, but it's spread and a couple stations have done it as early as now. A piece I did for the Boston Radio blog a couple yrs ago was titled "After Election Day Comes Christmas". Maybe there will only be one (non HD sub-)station this yr, WROR. WODS? Not on the main signal. The audience they're reaching probably wouldn't go for it (though some may
go for ROR). The songs they'd play if they did are from an older generation, mostly, not the hep
stuff they play now...for the most part.

Why put up Christmas decorations in stores in Aug or Sept.? If there's money to be made.
Halloween is a whole month at least now...and I live next to Salem where they really go bonkers over it. I don't know who else would do Christmas (WBMX? WMJX--naw I can't see TWO
Greater stations doing it).

I'm not saying I agree with it...I'm saying why they do it.

Why run it on HD3 if it's going to run on HD1?

Want to bet 100 bucks that it won't run on the main channel? Send me a PM. I'll be happy to make the C note.

Amp Radio is NOT going to play Christmas music.

Correct. Which is why it is on HD3.

Incidentally, the bitrate of the OTA HD3 stream is less than FM quality. HD stations have about 300 kbit/s to play with, which is divided amongst HD1/HD2/HD3/HD4. On 103.3, the HD3 is currently lower than HD2.

While I bring this up, apparently 104.1 now has an HD4 as of recently, with a spoken word format. Take a listen to "Boston's '80s Channel" on 104.1 HD2 for instance. It now sounds HORRIBLE! It has lower bandwidth than it did just about a month ago and it will sound like you are listening to AM (I drove to Salem, NH from Dartmouth, MA today and had the chance to listen in). Funny thing is, if you listen to 104.1 HD2 online, it sounds so much better (AAC+ stream). Is it really worth cutting the bitrate to fit in an HD4? I sure as heck do not believe so, unless it is a spoken word format.

Sad that there is so much negative stuff to rant about these days. Broadcasting is just not what it used to be. :'(

Apparently, the "Mercy Rock" Contemporary Christian music format that was bumped from 103.3 WODS HD3 for X-Mas music is now on 104.1 WBMX HD3.

If there is a 104.1 HD4 on the air, none of my HD radios acknowledge its existence right now. Perhaps it's not on the air at the moment. My receivers skip from 104.1 HD3 to 104.3.

104.1 HD3 was previously a CBS produced "New Age" talk network that was called "Psychic Radio", last year the name was changed to "Sky Radio". Maybe that was what you heard moved to 104.1 HD4.

They had been working, but seems like just today, they've found a way to block them unless you're using their radio.com app...

one-time tokens to stream links is common now, in this case it just seems URL changed.

http://208.80.52.168/WODSHD3AAC

webpage is using Adobe Flash, which definitely doesn't work on iPad/iPhone, so maybe if you start at WODS.com or so it will detect that and give you a player that works?

click on person's name then click send this member a personal message. I have gotten and received them. If it doesn't work for you it could be a flash or browser issue

YES! I just found the stream myself! Whoa! 10 days into Halloween and 'ODS has got the nerve to start Xmas music. Hey, if it keeps the Christmas music lovers happy, it's fine with me. I'm just looking for Halloween music!

Oh so they want the green stuff. $$$$$$

Which GM station will be going Christmas this year, is the question... You have to factor in signal strengths (is WROR a stronger signal than WMJX, for example)... and also which format seems more Christmas-friendly ;) (Both AC and Oldies are good picks for all-Christmas... Hot AC or Country not so much)
