Christmas stations that don't play certain standards

I remember that moment! It was embarrassing for Mariah and for the people who wanted to watch her sing. She sounded like nails on a chalkboard. Didn't she screw up New Year's Rockin' Eve a couple of years later?

Another great thing about the holiday season is the country Christmas songs I hear, and they are nearly always on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day only. There are some fantastic country songs played that I don't hear any other time of the year. Skip Ewing's 'My Name is Christmas Carol' is one of them. It's sappy, but nowhere near as stupid as 'The Christmas Shoes' by Newsong. George Strait, Garth Brooks, and Clint Black all did great Xmas songs too!

Linus & Lucy is played several times in A Charlie Brown Christmas, so it's a Christmas song.

"A Few of My Favorite Things" is a Christmas song too, even though it has nothing to do with Christmas. It gets played during the Christmas season in "The Sound of Music." There are a few brief lines that sort of sound Christmas-like, such as "Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eye lashes" and "Door Bells and Sleigh Bells and Schnitzel with Noodles."
"Brown paper packages tied up with strings." Even if they'd be more colorful.

Linus & Lucy is played year-round on KOAZ 'The Oasis' in Albuquerque. It's the smooth jazz version with David Benoit.
My Favorite Things is a Christmas song to the PDs. Julie Andrews' version is beautiful and often gets played. I think the Tony Bennett version gets a lot of airplay too.
The Vince Guaraldi version was played year-round on standards WAVO Charlotte. I don't recall whether it ever showed up when I was listening to WHVN, which had to do something to stay on the air until it could be sold last year and used the old WAVO collection.

All this griping about what is or isn’t a “Christmas” song is irrelevant. The reality is that’s how things like Linus and Lucy are widely classified. Some things just are, and that’s how they’re treated.

Let it go. 😆

Is there not ONE woman in the prime sales demographic on the membership rolls of Radio Discussions who can try to explain to the woefully out-of-demo assemblage here in this thread just why the music we're rolling our collective eyes at and swearing never to hear again is a wonderful, treasured and essential part of her life every November and December? That may be the only way to put this annual exercise in dyspeptic futility to bed.

Wow, long sentence.. Somehow I'm willing to bet you can count the number of female participants on Radio Discussions on one hand. Vast majority being made up of older white males who want you off their lawn.

Radio nerds love to talk about Christmas flip timing and their favorite songs plus individual artists. No use fighting it.

There are some really beautiful Christmas Carols. There are some crappy songs like Here Comes Santa Claus Right Down Santa Claus Lane.

I don't know how to explain it except for this male who advertisers don't want, these (at least the good songs and good performances) make me feel good every year. These were the songs that were playing in years past when I enjoyed Christmas more than I do now, and a few songs that seem to be newer bring back recent memories and have joined the others. It's also an opportunity to hear good music on a premium quality FM signal, with premium quality recordings in some cases, and even be able to listen at night. Although at home all streaming stations sound pretty much alike in terms of overall sound quality.

Want women's comments? Read any station's Facebook page. Plenty of them there!

Adult standards radio during the rest of the year has finally gotten to the point where some AC stations during the Christmas season sound MORE traditional.
