I'm not Bob, Dave or Reporter but I'll say that whomever made the decision to start Christmas music on November 1 on Mix is doing a bang up job at promoting satellite radio and iPods.

I live near Waterville and I have to agree with you onthemarks. I am 38 and options are weak now. Rock is WOUR, Top 40 is KISS, yes we can get Q103.5 in Albany and your loads of country and Lite 98.7. I wasn't a satellite fan but now I am becoming Sirius.

Actually, I'm surprised Mix didn't go all-Christmas 2 or 3 years ago, when CC stopped doing it on 93.5 (after making a reputation of being "the all-Christmas station" for several years before it became "The River").

My only guess is that they're going to merge Mix with Sunny. The sooner they do it, the less work they have to do. Why generate 2 separate music logs and maintain 2 separate music libraries when you can be cheap and lazy by just maintaining one for both stations? My guess is that Utica will be hearing Sunny 102 liners come January 1, 2008. It'll be interesting to check to see if both stations are simulcasting -- or if the music logs are at least somewhat close to each other. Then again, they could very well decide to get lazy with the logs just for now, playing the same crap on both stations, only to go back to their separate identities (and playlists).

What does surprise me, however, is that they've started this early. Who's going to listen to this crap all day long this early in November? I think starting on Black Friday is good enough. Heck, even 6pm on Thanksgiving itself is fine. But November 1st? Give me a break. Anyone who DOES listen to this stuff now ... forget about Christmas, they're gonna be worn out by THANKSGIVING.

I don't want to sound like Ebenezer Scrooge, but seriously, does anyone really listen to non-stop Christmas music the entire time it's offered? Not counting PDs or other radio people who "have" to listen, show me someone who voluntarily (ie. not "forced" to hear it at work) eats this crap up, day in and day out, for hours at a time, listening to nothing else. I won't hold my breath.

Maybe Ed thinks starting this early will get Y94FM to abandon all-Christmas. (Didn't they both go for it last year?) After all, Y94 would look pretty lame entering the all-Christmas race three and a half weeks after Sunny's already been playing that game.

Frankly, I think Y94 should walk away. Going all-Christmas is usually better off for the "lagging" AC station in a market. The "leader" should never stoop to that level. All-Christmas is a "nothing to lose, everything to gain" tactic. Meanwhile, the leading AC has everything to lose. Lite in Utica doesn't go for it, and neither should Y94. Having one station go all-Christmas is perfect. People who want to hear it can hear it, and sure, the "follower" might boost its cume, but watch their TSL go down, to the point the overall ratings have little to no gain anyway. When a "leader" station goes all-Christmas, they just bleed TSL like there's no tomorrow. Sure, some people will like it. But even your most dedicated P1's -- the folks who've literally ripped the knobs off every radio they own at home, at work and in the car -- will find those knobs (or buy new radios if they have to) just to escape from the hell that is 24/7 Christmas music.

A leader station can sprinkle in a bit of holiday flavor here and there, but don't overdo it, especially when it's not even the holiday season yet. As you said, funnyman, people barely have their Halloween decorations down!

Ho-ho-ho

Christmas music is the format of choice for programmers who have no money, and no idea how to attract an audience. It serves as muzak for offices and small businesses, and pumps up numbers for background music stations. It's also an easier sell to merchants who want to hear their own commercials in their stores.

It will be interesting to see what's on the radio December 26th.
