CHR's current core artists based on Mediabase

My home of Boston notwithstanding, here is the list of CHR's core artists based on Mediabase's gold playlist. That, and not recurrent, is where you get an idea of what a station's overall philosophy is. For example, if it loads up on Bon Jovi, 3 Doors Down, Nickelback and No Doubt (like Kiss 108), it leans rock. If it loads up on Usher, Nelly, the Fugees and TLC (like - gee, I can't think of any station near Boston which does that), it leans rhythmic.

Now here's the national list:

Nelly - 7 songs

Usher and No Doubt - 6 each

Green Day, OutKast, 3 Doors Down and Destiny's Child - 4 each

Kelly Clarkson, Maroon 5, P. Diddy, Notorious BIG, Justin Timberlake, Nickelback, Jay-Z, his new wife Beyonce, the Fugees (Pras' "ghetto Superstar" is included under that umbrella), Shaggy, Avril Lavigne, Christina Aguilera, Goo Goo Dolls, Pink, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, TLC, Matchbox 20, Alicia Keys and Creed - 3 each

50 Cent, Ciara, Lil' Jon, Linkin Park, the Killers, Tupac Shakur, Baby Bash, Evanescence, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Aaliyah, Jagged Edge, Black Eyed Peas, Ludacris, K-Ci and JoJo (not the teenage singer JoJo, who only has one gold title listed), Mariah Carey, Blaque, 112, INOJ, Kid Rock (I include Uncle Kracker under the Kid Rock umbrella), Bon Jovi, John Mayer and Santana - 2 each

The highest ranked artist with just one gold title: Gavin DeGraw (I Don't Want To Be)

Overall, 32.8% of all gold titles come under the rock category. (Anything with a metal/hard rock sound, i.e. Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" and anything Avril Lavigne has done counts IMHO.) The rock artists will be shown in bold. :)

However, if you look at the currents, the pattern is away from rhythmic. CHR, like any other format, goes in cycles. There is still some very good rhythmic product out there, but rock and pop are more dominant on Top 40 right now. Taylor Swift has crossed over in addition to other country stuff.

Radio is in an age with a lot of competition to its survival - a lot more then what it ever has had. It's more about what the listeners want to hear then it ever has been - and that's what I try to replicate in my situation. Radio can survive - but it's gotta be done right. I'm not in favor of the FCC's recent proposal (04-233, IIRC)...because many of the rules included are extreme. However, the less we report to Wall Street, and the more we report to the listener, the more chance we have of surviving, and bringing terrestrial radio back to the forefront - instead of being tied in the same conversations with ipods and sattelitte radio.

This post fails. Kiss 108 Boston definitely doesn't lean Rock ::) If they were, they'd be playing songs like Puddle of Mud "Psycho" and Weezer's "Pork and Beans"

Typical midday hour at Kiss 108
Britney "Break The Ice"
Nelly "Ride With Me"
Usher "Love In This Club"
Rihanna "Don't Stop The Music"
Danity Kane "Damaged"
Maroon 5 "Makes Me Wonder"
Cascada "What Hurts The Most"
Red Hot Chilli Peppers "Under The Bridge"
Madonna "4 Minutes"
Chris Brown "With You"
Leona Lewis "Bleeding Love"

Doesnt look like a Rock leaning station to me, not in the least LOL.

Typical evening hour on Kiss 108
Britney "Break The Ice"
Leona Lewis "Bleeding Love"
Danity Kane "Damaged"
Flo Rida "Low"
Cascada "What Hurts The Most"
One Republic "Stop And Stare"
Miley Cyrus "See You Again"
Lil Wayne "Lollipop"
Britney "Piece of Me"
Colby Odonis "What You Got"
Fallout Boy "This Aint A Scene"
Metro Station "Shake It"
Usher "love In This Club"

Both sample hours were taken from this past Friday and can be verified on yes.com

Steve is all over KISS on the Boston boards because they are not still disco. He refered to Daughtry as "heavy metal" in one post...just like he claims Kelly Clarkson and Avril have a metal lean.

Adam hit the nail on the head. There is an ebb and flow to the CHR format and successful stations are not only good at picking and playing the currents, they are good at balancing the right recurrent and gold records, too. Sorry Steve, a station's gold category does NOT define it's philosophy.

Also, just because a station may play Bon Jovi, Nickelback or the Killers in gold rotation, does not mean it's a rock leaning station. If they played NOTHING but those songs, then yes, they'd lean rock. But, I think CHRles' post debunks your theory.

As for KISS Steve, according to MediaBase 24/7, of the 21 gold titles they play in regular rotation 6 are of rock texture. So even if your "gold titles = station philosophy" wasn't as ridiculous as it sounds, they would still be right around the 30% mark, which, by your own admission, is LESS than the format average.

Going with the whole "CHR goes thorugh cycles" thing, that's why Kiss 108 has stayed so relevent. They change with the times and always sound fresh, without ignoring their past.

I think anyone who grew up with it can still recognize it, but can also feel like they aren't missing out on the new stuff either. They really are a great station, and have been for a long time.

I don't much care for what is (or isn't!) between the records on Kiss these days, but Primitive is dead on with his assessment of their music. Who else is playing Cascada's "What Hurts The Most?" It fits their heritage, but it stiffed out everywhere else.

I think KISS is a well-balanced great station. It's maintained it's success over a long period of time so they definitely know what they're doing. Having Matty In the Morning doesn't hurt either.

And Will, I really like the jocks and the imaging at the station. Sure they don't ramble on, but they are solid IMO.
