CHRs that use "Mix" as their slogan

I always wondered why some CHRs use Mix as their name. Like KXXM Mix 96.1 in San Antonio or WWXM Mix 97.7 in Myrtle Beach, SC. I think it may mislead people to believe it's a hot AC or AC station when it's not.

It doesn't, because listeners don't think like radio people. Radio is awful at branding, so you can call your station whatever you want. Your listeners only care about whether or not their favorite music is playing when they tune in. Until Radio offers them more than that, it's how it will continue to be.

Mix 106.5 Boston as well,,, but it did used to be AC,,, some of these stations started as AC and morphed to CHR and never bothered changing their familier name,, keeps the older demos around. Another is Mix 108 in Duluth mn...

The only real reason why we equate "Mix" branding with Hot AC stations is because Clear Channel went through and stamped that moniker on so many of their Hot AC stations. Same thing with "KISS FM" for CHR.

The first Hot A/C "Mix" branded station was Mix 105 Orlanndo in 1989. Up till then it was Orlando's powerhouse CHR outlet, BJ 105. I think Mix 105 was owned by Nationwide. The second station to call itself Mix was probably Mix 96.5 Houston or perhaps Mix 104.7 Phoenix when KZZP flipped from CHR to Hot A/C in 1990. By the mid 90s dozens upon dozens of markets had Hot A/Cs named Mix, well before Clear Channel gobbled up stations in every market. These days though it seems like many of the Mix stations are indeed owned by Clear Channel, and their playlists oftentimes aren't all that customized for their local markets. This creates very generic radio dials, especially in places like Ohio - drive from Cleveland, Youngstown, Canton, Columbus, and Dayton and here's what you'll find:

http://www.mix989.com/main.html
http://www.mix941.com/
http://www.mix971.net

CHR-wise if you drive from Cleveland to Pittsburgh via Youngstown you'll always be able to pick up a CHR named Kiss:

Even though we may associate Kiss FMs with Clear Channel branded CHRs, there are just as many Kiss stations in the US that are known for other formats, such as Country (Kiss 99.9 Miami), Rock, (Kiss 99.5 San Antonio), or Urban (93.9 Kiss FM Washington). In fact, most of the original Kiss stations weren't CHR. Kiss 108 Boston started out as a Disco station around in the late 70s, 102.7 KIIS FM started out as an A/C around the same time, and in the early 80s New York got 98.7 Kiss which was a Rhythmic CHR.

I am pretty sure the 1st Mix branded station was WMYX 99.1 in Milwaukee...I don't recall the exact year but I believe it was in the mid 80's...like perhaps 83 or 84. I know I have seen it well documented that it was the 1st hot ac station to use the mix brand.

99.3 Atlantic City was Called "The Buzz" and it was Urban and Rhythmic at times. Out of Character for sure.

Then they Flipped to CHR/Pop and Called themselves "kiss-fm" They flipped back to Rhythmic But still are called Kiss.

The "mix" station where I live is a HotAC format.

I just hate the time when KPTY 103.9 The Party became rock! It was the dumbest party station we ever had! But then it was all good again when they decided to go all pop, only to eventually go back to top 40, or top 40 with a rhythmic feel. NOW, I'm just glad we got KZON, since KPTY is now gone.

Kiss 99.5 San Antonio's call letters are literally KISS. That was why CC didn't label 96.1 as KISS FM. Plus, when they arrived on air back in 1998, they were hot AC with a rock lean, similar to Mix 96.5 in Houston. Of course, it wasn't too long until they were a full fledged CHR. IMO they should change their moniker because the "Mix" slogan is associated with hot AC. "Hot 96.1" has a nice tone to it.

I was wondering who stole the actual "KISS"! Too bad it wasn't 102.7 KIIS fm, the BIG one that everybody knows and loves (although I think Amp is more fun).

Mix 1079/WVMX/Columbus (owned by Saga) - they're technically 80s, 90s, NOW (Hot AC) but their playlist is reflecting Adult CHR and they're skewing towards that more lately.

Please keep in mind that it's ONLY radio people that think this. Listeners don't "associate" anything like this unless they have prior experience to draw on (like if their fave station in a different market they lived in was called something). Besides, Radio has over-hyped the audience so much by now that they barely believe anything you tell them anyway (WE'RE NUMBER 1111 *beats chest*).

You don't just change the name because the station has evolved (rather than flipped). Do you associate the word "apple" with computers? Is it because that's a word to describe computers? Or is it because their superb level of branding makes them one and the same? If anything, Radio stations need to learn how to better brand their products, and stop worrying about semantics.

I first heard Mix being used on CIMX Windsor on a trip to Detroit in the late 80s. In fact, it was the first time I recall being exposed to a hot AC format. It was weird how I never heard any rap music on the station.

New Orleans used to have a CHR called Mix 104.1. It started out as hot AC, but evolved to CHR after B97 switched to a hybrid of talk and CHR at night and weekends. Mix's ratings began to tank and eventually switched to an even more disastrous classic hits format. The Mix name is now on 92.3 after WDVW's rhythmic AC format evolved to hot AC.

A CHR from Franklin, NH that I hear when I go to Rochester, NH uses mix in their slogan Mix 94.1- Today's Hit Music.

Mix 106.5 Baltimore can now be added to that list since they now use the slogan "Today's Best Music"
I picked up Mix 106.5 on my HD radio and the RDS said "MIX 106.5 BALTIMORE'S #1 HIT MUSIC CHANNEL"
