I think they way to get ahead at MainLine is to be a intern.. you know what they say [EDIT]

[EDIT-offensive content]

Hey radiogeek, are you sure? He's still on the DJX website.

I was thinking of Interning at DJX??? But I dunno now. They seem to love to fire people at mainline.

OK, any radio company enjoys firing people... it's called a business and budget cuts.. it's no different than Clear Channel.. Cox hasn't had any in a while in Louisville, wonder if 2008 will bring some there?

Looks like the new owners are going to continue the cheap ways of the previous owners. Makes me wonder if Pete is being bought out of his contract with DJX so they can make the bottom line look better.

Has anyone heard diesel on 105.1???Now that is someone that deserves to be fired. He sounds very very very green. I thought the objective of a radio station is to get listeners not scare them off. Thats what i did when i heard him. I liked the song i heard but couldn't bear his voice therefore i switched stations.

Bottom line is Chuck did live overnights @ DJX... no money is to be made in that timeslot.. so why pay someone a salary to do it? Chuck had been at DJX for a little over 10 years, so I'm sure he had a nice vacation bank built up..

But overnights are not rated.. why pay someone a salary to do something a computer can do for free.. isn't that the radio way?

Chuck did overnights, but he also kept an eye on the other stations there since they were unmanned. So now there are five radio stations with nobody to watch over them overnight. Wonder how many morning crews are going to come in just to find dead air on their station now. Computers do crash, and they do not care what time it is.

And that is rightfully PROGRAMMING's problem, not engineering, when it crashes. It was programming's salary cut. And most of the time it is a mistake made by programming or traffic that makes the systems crash to begin with.

But you know what they're thinking, don't you? "Call Don." BULL----!

That does not stop them from trying to make it an engineering problem. Of course none of the PDs would own up to making a mistake in Selector that made it crash....or simply stop at an unknown event. It is very shortsighted not to have anyone in the building to look after 5 stations like that.

Doesn't the FCC still require an "operator" in the building? I was under the impression that they needed a body in the building by law......

Not at this time, but that is one of the things the FCC is looking to reimplement. My memory is foggy, but there was some kind of train wreck in one of the Dakotas that caused a leak or spill or something like that and there was nobody at any of the radio stations in town to disseminate the information. They weren't being very good public servants by failing to have even a minimum wage board op on duty, and it really started the scrutiny by the FCC.

And rightfully so. It is the height of irresponsibility for the owner of multiple radio stations to fail to have at least one person in charge of the site at all times.

Here's what they are saying: "I know that by doing this, I will be off the air a few times this year, possibly all my stations at once. I will miss a certain number of disasters and big news stories. My morning shows, PDs, and engineers, all of whom are far better paid than an hourly board op, will all have to put in extra time and work harder, so that I can save the $16,800 per year it would take to man my stations from7pm-5am and all day Saturday and Sunday."

That's really smart.

And the thing is, the guy at night is a security guard, show prep collector, or could do web stuff or database management or tons of legitimate things that need to be done anyway. But too many GMs are too stupid to realize that.

Good points Greg. But in all honesty, how many PD's would let there board-ops go on air and give a weather report during a tornado on a Saturday or Sunday night? WVEZ doesn't even let the board-op doing Delilah's show do anything on air.

You're right, but I'm not one to complain about dessert when I can't get dinner. I do think the days of having qualified air talent overnights and weekends is pretty much gone at this time. I'm not even arguing for that.

I'm saying we need someone in the house to see if the commercials are being played, if the stopsets are running on time, if the wino has broken the lock to get in and keep warm, if the server has blue screened, if there's an ammonia leak downtown, or the studio building is on fire.

He can CALL SOMEBODY to give the report on the air! The important part is that we care enough about our product to pay someone to make sure it's ok at all times.

Hey All thanks for the words. I've had a great 20 years in radio so far. Radio has come down to computers and automation now and for me it was just my time. I stayed on overnights because I liked it. DJX was a dream for me back in 89' when radio was somewhat at it's best. I got to live that dream and am happy with my accomplishments, Plus working with some great talent. For now Chuck Bradleys headphones are oficially hung up and it's time to see what life is like from the other side of the Mic again. Right now it just happens to be from the unemployment side...LOL It's been a great 10 years at DJX and 3 sales since I started. I'm ready to move on into something else. I wish you all well and great success my friends and hope to see you around wherever I end up 8). Chuck Bradley / Chucky B
