Chuck Dowdle is retiring

I am surprised that Chuck Dowdle would be the first of the core anchor team to retire...but I understand from the blog post that WSB-TV management begged him to stay last year.

As for a replacement...Zach and Autumn are too new to the market. They will have to hire away someone from the competition. They could hire one of the WXIA sports anchors (particularly Randy Waters or Sam Crenshaw, who both have been in the market for a long time). WSB-TV has cash, and WXIA doesn't. Shouldn't be a problem...just have to deal with noncompetes.

Considering Jeff is on Cox Radio's payroll I guess that would not be too much of a stretch for him to work for Cox television as well. Jeff's long history covering sports for channel 5 as their lead sports guy would give channel 2 somebody that knows local sports.

I say bring back the Hull-man. His first love has got to be TV, and I enjoyed him all those years on Channel 5. I think it's a no-brainer for Channel 2.

Hullinger would be great and my ONLY choice of local guys for the job. He's an excellent news anchor on 750 and his personality shines through on his newscasts. I've enjoyed Chuck a bunch and hope his gig with UGA helps their radio broadcasts. He seems like a really nice guy.

Is Chuck replacing Larry Munson as voice of
the Dawgs? I know Munson works only home
games, but is he hanging up his mike for good?

Agree completely about Hullinger. He would be the ideal choice to replace Chuck.

Munson resigned after the second game last season, and Scott Howard took over as play-by-play. He has been announced as the permanent replacement for Munson, and he's exceptionally good. Eric Zeier will be his sidekick.

Unless the radio and tv groups work completely independent of each other, I guess it won't be Jeff Hullinger as Chuck's replacement since WSB radio fired him yesterday.

Yup, I think getting fired from WSB radio probably means Hullinger ain't getting the sports gig on channel 2.

I'm beginning to think they'll move Zach to weekdays and have Autumn Sam do weekends.

It remains a mystery inside. We are guessing money saving. He wasn't doing much on the Steve and Vikki Show. Hullinger was a popular figure in here. He got along with everyone. It looks like he is being replaced by staffers. We wonder what's next for him and us.

That's a shame. I liked him even back when he was with local TV (WXIA? - I can't remember for sure) back in the 90s.

Good luck to him and to you.

Hullinger was on WAGA. I don't know where Dowdle was before he went to Channel 2.

Chuck's originally from Atlanta, graduated from UGA and came from WPLG Miami in October 1985. He replaced Bob McLane. I think he was brought on as the gold 2 logo and new news set debuted.

A week or two ago, around the time when that banquet for Chuck took place, John and Jovita said on-air that Chuck wasn't leaving entirely. And as I see from the link to the story now on the sports page, it says only that he will no longer be Sports Director.
