Chuck Gets The Job

CB and Frank deserve each other.
Barrett is good at baseball, but it remains to be seen if he is really as good as he thinks he is.

this is bad news....its not personal....but he is not the man for the job....we need someone with a decent voice...not a monotone...everything ends in a question.....boring....annoying voice...not to mention the fact that class is now gone from the booth...we can only hope that kieth jackson stays...

i always said it would never be right ater paul eells....man was i right

this cant last long...the u of a will come around after frank is gone....too damn bad

i agree with zippy...and thanks to the moderator..not really EXACLTY sure what he said...

here is what i wonder....not so much why not mike nail again....but why not anyone but chucky

I had felt all along that it was going to be Barrett. Barrett gave up his statewide radio show a few months ago to be closer to NW Ark. He had been providing some commentary for the last few years during the actual game broadcasts. And he already was doing baseball - a sport which has enjoyed greater radio coverage than in the past. Not to knock Inman, but I just don't think he had enough experience. And, I think Dale Nicholson of KATV overplayed his hand here a bit. Obviously, having Paul Eells doing the broadcasts and be sports editor for KATV was a double dose of good fortune for the station. With the passing of Eells, however, KATV didn't carry as big of a stick going into the talks with the U of A. With 2 years left on their ARSN contract, the university could (and might have behind closed doors), told KATV that if it didn't drop it's insistance on Inman getting the job, then the university would simply buy out the remaining 2 years on the ARSN contract and take total control of the broadcasts. This would have been an unmitigated disaster for KATV, so I think they backed off. Make no mistake, the university was sitting at the table, holding most of the good cards in this deal. I wouldn't be surprised, that in 2 years, the university might go ahead and take control of the broadcasts anyway, since Paul passed away. And at the very risk of inviting the unadulterated rath of Nutt-Haters, I mention this: Another smaller, but notable aspect of this story is the Nutt-hater crowd which won't tolerate ANYBODY who has one good thing to say about Frank or Houston Nutt. In my opinion, like the talk show hosts (Rush, Hannity, etc.) who have single-handedly polarized politics in this country (and that's sad), the Nutt-hater crowd has polarized the issue of the Razorback PBP person. Folks, Razorback football is just a game, enjoyed by many. It's not life and death. I would been have happy with either Inman or Barrett. I just think that Barrett had the slight edge in experience.

I guess I won't repeat it. My attempt at being clever was shot down by THE MAN.

But ... let me say - so as not to sound in contrast to earlier posts - that I liked Barrett as host of Sports Rap. I just don't think he's a terrific PBP guy, and I think his close access to Broyles sealed the deal.

Here's a link to a good article that includes a link to a PDF of the actual UA/KATV contract:

http://arkansasbusiness.com/article.aspx?lID=87&sID=88&ms=89&cID=Z&aID=98505.66110.110631

That's all I'll say...for fear of the [EDIT]-meister...

Once Again... I will prove we can agree on certain things... WPIV is right on a couple of levels

(1) The job was Chuck's to be lost. His contract ended with ARN for Sports Rap and it shows a little smarts on both his and ARN's part for allowing that to end the way it did. Chuck is now a full time employee of the University (so I am told) and will eventually be the voice of Razorback Basketball when Mike retires. Not sure what will happen with baseball, if Chuck continues with it as well or not

(2) Dale did overplay his hand somewhat. I know that is hard to imagine, ARSN trying to bully someone... anyway. KATV can play this right and keep their contract after Frank is gone and they may not have such a strained relationship with the next AD

(3) Finally, WPIV nailed a little behind the scenes fact... The HDN haters did not want Chuck... but Inman would have been just as much of an apologist as Barrett.

And Honestly, don't you want the PBP guy to "drink the kool-aid?"... Remember, every broadcast is a 4 - 5 hour Recruitment Effort just as much as it is a game broadcast. (Ask SAU, OBU and Henderson State if they view their broadcasts as a recruitment seminar)

I understand people's frustrations with him as a talk show host being an apologist for the program.

But being a rabid Razorback fan since birth, and a play-by-play guy at that, if I knew that there was a good chance that I were going to have that job in ten years, I'd drink the Kool-Aid by the gallon and toe the company line. I'm happy for him.

I doubt though, that I would go so far as to compare the fans to terrorists. That was a rather ill-concieved comment.

Hey the Mogul is right. (Wow, I'm not sure those words have ever been put in that order before!). I'm not sure where all this Barrett hating is coming from. The guy is a tremendous broadcaster. All the talk against him is because style and not substance. Is there anyone that can honestly say anything bad about his work on the pre, half, and post game football casts? For crying out loud, he's got back problems from having to carry Quinn Grovey for 2 hours a week! When you tune in to Hogs games this year, Chuck will be extremely prepared and you'll be able to close your eyes and see the game.

Really is there anything else you can ask from a pxp guy?

My oh my!! Sandy, if this keeps up, we might all be sitting around the campfire, singing *** ba ya and smoking a peace pipe before long. Thanks for the compliment! ;)

no...you are both wrong...he go tthe job because he is familiar to franky-boy...and no other reason...lets add it up...
1. voice quality--a big zero
2. flair for the dramatics...big zero (did you listen to baseball...rick is head and shoulder's better than chuck)
3. class--big zero--it's chuck's opinion or none
4. ability to annoy the listener with his nasal...everything ends in a question way of talking...HEY!!!! chuck gets a big 100% on that one

hopefully the new a.d. at the u of a. will see the light...
if we are lucky kieth jackson will stay on....

"...My attempt at being clever was shot down by THE MAN..."

I'm obviously not "the man", but it takes little talent or creativity to be clever by using gutter language or obscenities. People laugh at stuff like that because, for the most part, they're embarassed.

Deputy Dog: you're right...he's got the job because's he's Frank's boy. There's no doubt about it.

But I think your objections:

1 - voice quality. That's style not substance.
2 - flair for dramatics. The game is going to dictate that! There's no need to go crazy on the air
about a Hogs TD if they're losing by 20.
3 - class. I didn't hear what he said about terriorists, etc. But one classless statement doesn't
necessiarly mean he's a classless guy, right? Have you ever said anything on the air that
you regret?
4 - annoying. Again that's style.

I think Keith and Chuck will be a good team. Chuck will be nuts and bolts...Keith will add some flavor. Just like Chuck and Rick on baseball.

There were actually no obscenities or gutter language in what I posted. The term "brown noser" was left in and the phrases edited out were just other ways of saying "brown noser." I wasn't trying to elicit laughter - just expressing my feelings!

Back to Barrett...again, I liked him on "Sports Rap" and like what he adds to the Hog broadcast. But I just don't think he's the right guy for PBP. Agree with Mogul that all of us would cuddle up to the UA for a shot at the job ... but I don't think there was a big enough search conducted.

Heck, if the truth was known, I would bet you that there was no search conducted whatsoever.
I kind of sort of agree with Wally Hall....this thing has been done for a while. ::)

The subject of who replaces Chuck has not been mentioned here. I thought as soon as it became apparent that Chuck would get the top spot, Inman would be the natural choice for Chuck's old spot. Not only would it be a good compromise between U of A and KATV, Scott has already hosted the scoreboard show at halftime and in postgame, so it's not like he's a total stranger. KATV may also get a contract extention out of this, so as to keep everyone happy since they HAD to back down on the PBP. Scott would take over Chuck's pre-half-and postgame show host duties. This would be the best outcome for all concerned in my opinion.

Ok, so Chuck got the job. Who gets Chuck's old job? Mogul? You in the running??

A year and a half ago I would have been lobbying to be the "fans in the stands" host... You really had the potential to get the phone numbers of some quality women that way.

These days my wife would have something to say about that. ;D

I haven't heard any speculation as to who might do Chuck's old ARSN duties, other than a competing talk show host in Fort Smith who has proclaimed that he is in the running. I ingested a rather large grain of salt upon hearing that comment.
