Chuck Smith Out at the Zone

Rodney Ho reported on the AJC blog that Chuck Smith is out at 790 the Zone. He was off the air the last two days much like the Chuck Oliver fight where they kept saying he would be back the next day.

He wasn't that good to begn with and I think ratings struggled so no big shock but his repeated comments last week on when it is acceptable to hit a women could not have gone over well at the Zone. It probably started as a suspension and went into severing ties.

Of all days for Chuck Smith to be let go.

The Zone website still has Chuck Smith's picture but the text doesn't mention him at all.

Speaking of Rodney...we had lunch today and I shared my vision of DAVE-FM with him.

Yes what a day to go. I guess the Vick apologists will have to wait for Ryan Stewart to take the air at 3:00.

Good luck on your campaign for Dave. I am sure Rodney will shill for you.

Just having a guy who spouts off low rent views like Smith did dragged down their entire product.
The guy would talk about preaching at church and then the next minute he is talking about strip bars.
Going urban with class acts like the Stewart brothers is one thing, going gutter talk with Chuck Smith was another.
I wonder if 680 makes a run at him.

Outside of their ethnic make-up, there is no real comparison between the Stews and Chuck Smith. I just don't think Chuck is that bright of a guy. You might not agree with the Stews takes but their not stupid. They might not be totally immersed in stats and no every fact or figure but they are not trying to do that type of show.

If I remember correctly Chuck had to go to a CC or JC to get his grades up to get in Tennessee? If yu don;t have the grade to get into Tennessee then............

Chernoff is minor league at best, Oliver is single A minor league AT BEST.

Chernoff's bigger problem is that he has very over blown opinion of himself and his so called talent.

Fits that station MO however. Never put anyone on the air better than AA level Steak.

I like Chuck Smith, but he never worked for me on the Zone. I wanted to like him, but his delivery was awkward. Chernoff is fine by me, but nothing special. I really like Chuck Oliver though. He jumped over Dimino and Cellini as my favorite host on 790 the Zone a while back. This is coming from and Alabama fan to make it even more shocking. I think Chernoff and Oliver are best when they have each other to play off of though. Without Chuck Oliver I'd have just about no interest in listening to Matt Chernoff.

ETA: I heard here last week or so that Chuck Smith wanted to go to 680 and get Dukes' old spot. Anyone heard if there's anything to that? I don't think it would be a terrible move to put him there with Rude and Perry.

You hit the nail on the head. Very awkward delivery. I like Chernoff alot and him and Chuck Oliver make a strong team.

Chuck Smith wanted to go to 680 might just be a save face kind of thing. I was just starting to think that Rude and Perry were hitting their stride. Smith in the mix not so sure. I supported him when he replaced Oliver but he never improved. He just does not know how to make a point.

I really think Oliver is the strongest talent at either sports station. His knowledge base is deeper than anyone's. Yes he is a savant when it comes to college football, but listen to him on just about anything and he has his facts and history down cold. He is opinionated and arrogant and has a quirky delivery that actually has some good old boy charm.

It's really a shame that Dimino couldn't handle having someone as smart (or smarter) and arrogant as he is when they were paired together. That had the potential to be a very interesting show, but it was not meant to be. Since then, Oliver had kind of been the odd man out and that was too bad as we had to suffer through Chuck Smith and the Stews every afternoon.

Chernoff is a good setup man for him. They use to be my favorite show on the station, I am guessing they will be again soon.

Chernoff and Oliver at least have chemistry, whether you personally like their show or not. They share the mic and don't seem to feel the need to constantly one up each other. I ahve always felt that they may be the one mix that 790 has not tried in order to try and derail Buck and Kincade in afternoon drive. The Stews continue to do great work within their target demo, but they have like the others fallen to 680's team. I bet that if 790 gave Chernoof and Olive a chance against B&K, they would do better in making it a more even race.
