CHUM-FM's early programming

After CHUM flipped to AC in 1984 from Album Rock, what type of programming did they carry, like "Lights Out", "Sunday Funnies", etc.? Also, when did they go Hot AC? I assume its 1990 when the format took off, but not sure.
Also, I currently listen to their "Back in the Day Double Play" during RD&M and love the feature. However, I question as to what music they play on that did the station actually did play in the 80s/90s.
 
In the late 90's it was the lost 80's lunch.
Today it's the back in the day cafe. (with some 90's thrown in)
CHUM FM used to be very strict. The powers that be didn't like anything that was too "Teeniebopperish".
 
I think you mean "Back in the Day Double Play". And define teeniebopperish? Like no Britney, more Bryan Adams and Matchbox 20 stuff?

I called them up and asked them why they cancelled Rick Dees (some time in the 90's) and they said "Don't you think that's just a little too teeniebopperish for what we do around here?"

Radio was very different back then (in Canada). The CRTC Regs for FM were very different.
(including, what was then known as a 49% non hit rule for FM...)

If you're looking for Theatre of the mind today, I think you can find it on AM 740.
The comedy can be found on CFRB 1010 on the over nights.

CHUM-FM was one of those AORs confounded by the success of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" LP in 1983...a year which led to many North American AORs to flip to CHR (I.e. Boston's WCOZ and New York's WPLJ). Chum-FM had already had started to lean Adult Pop-Rock, but initially ignored the string of huge Thriller hits. Eventually, they succumbed and started giving MJ airtime and surrendered "Rock" to Q107. CHUM-FM spend the remainder of the 80s as an adult rock or Rock AC format, much like Buffalo's WBEN-FM had been as Rock 102 in the early 1980s or Boston's WBOS was in the 1990s/2000s. Good format/sound. Sometime around 1990 they really started to lean female and Hot AC, abandoning their rock roots.
 
What was their logic? Did they flip because they thought it would make more money and try to chip at CHFI? Or, when Hot AC took off after the success of Mix in Houston, did they flip to it because it was the "in" thing, and test it to see if it would work?
