Churban in Columbia?

I hear TJ McKay at Citadel has been interviewing potential talent for a Churban format. Would would that do to the market, especially Clear Channel (The Beat and WNOK). That would be a great combo buy with their other Urban WLXC. Like the old saying goes, I guess two Urbans are better than one.

Guess either WTCB or Oldies 103 is going buh bye.

IMHO, Columbia needs another Urban station like it needs more street construction downtown.

I couldn't see B106 flipping, considering that they are the only AC in town. As for 103.1, do we see Z103 coming?

WLTY and WTCB are almost indistinguishable, other than WTCB sounds like it s rying really hard to sound like a small-marke radio station IMHO.

Believe it or not, WOMG does beter 12+ than B106.

B106 is the #1 local biller in the market. They aren't going anywhere. Oldies flipping would make since. No one cares about 12+. If it's done right, a CHR/Urban could bring WNOK to its knees. The other question in Columbia is, who is going to be the first to put Spanish on FM?

That would be a shame if Oldies 103 went off the air. They are one of the last remaining FM oldies stations in South Carolina. And I like that they throw in some 50's and some Beach music in too.

If B106 is "the #1 Local Biller" I am a monkey's uncle. Given the mid-pack, at best, position 12+ and other strong competition in demo.

Flipping one of few choices for the 35+ audience to be a perrenial urban also-ran that will never bill as much as Oldies is a HUGE mistake. Last I checked, the 35+ and 45+ crowd is still buying houses, cars, fashions, etc. well into their mid 60's and beyond. Why give up an exclusive position on that to be the 6th Urban station?

Not that wiser people have made not made bigger gaffes.

Spanish on FM is still my choice.
Edited by DudeFan on 03/16/06 12:54 PM.

And that's what needs to be addressed as well. Many Hispanics are buying as well in this market, and a lot of them live out in the country, and can not hear an AM station that far out from the city. Besides, after sundown, no one can. Spanish on FM would work well.

Spanish would fit on 93.5, I'd say.

If anyone of the Citadel stations will flip it will be Oldies. They are all over the road with the format. Its worse than ever. B-106 may have soft numbers but that does not matter to them. They have been in the format for years and have built solid relationships with clients.

The question is who would go Oldies??? Dudefan is right....45+ have a ton of money...Oldies done right...the way Oldies 103 sounded a few years back, would be awesome.

"Done right" or not, more folks listen to 103.1 than B106.

Client relationships are great and may delay the inevitable, but evenually it all comes down to bodies. Why advertise with B106 for more $$, when you get almos the same bodies for fewer dollars and mostly the same music on WLTY? B106 is a very expensive buy.

Think about and have some fun with this. If T.J. does this and it backfires it won't be pretty.

I don't see B changing either... I could see TJ bringing a Diva to Columbia like what is down in the Big Easy... Sold along with B they would have the all important money demo tied up... I would hate to see oldies go also, but you have to go with a format with the most return.... If indeed the rumor is true and one of the stations is not cutting the mustard something needs to be done... I would like to see something like the old C 103 or Yes 97 pop up in Columbia and give NOK a good run for the money... It would make radio in Cola Town fun again... JMO CC

Surprised anyone remembered the old YES 97. Worked there part-time and remembered how well it did. It was really giving NOK a tough time. I think COS was pretty much an icon that stood alone for years with no competition and someone took a chance to steal away some of the numbers, so hence KICKS 96 went into action. As you know, the competition bought them out and nipped it in the bud and became WLTY.Again COS back to their status. Later came New 92 and Legends. Again we see the trend with the underdog(s) falling under with letting announcers go and relying on automation. Don't get me wrong, the VT's sound fine, but give a few years and people WILL catch on that the personality is gone. That IS the one thing B106 does have in it's favor. Being live. Trust me, down the line someone in the market is going to go back to the basics and take request and believe me, people will be shocked at the reaction. It's good to make an easy buck, but at what expense. As for Legends 94.3, it's a good thing for now, but without the personality and detailed info they could turn out a much better input for their audience. It's ok , but could use some spunk. Too cut and dried. It's a sitting success if done right. As for churban if done right can work well in cola. Honestly, I think it's time for a change for B106. Too many years the same old same old.
Edited by VAPMAN on 03/18/06 04:28 AM.

Good point, let's do have some fun with this. How would this work for Columbia...

92.1 Capitol 92 Country-traditional country
93.1 ESPN-sports
93.5 Spanish
93.9 WIGL 93-9 (Wiggle 93-9)-rhythmic AC (like a diva format or star in boston)
94.3 Q94-3-oldies
95.3 Gospel-black gospel
96.7 The Buzz-active rock
97.5 WCOS-country
98.5 Kiss-FM-Hot UAC (much like kiss in MYB, and Jamz in GSP)
100.1 The Beat-Urban
101.3 The big DM-UAC
102.3 The River-classic hits/variety
103.1 Z103-dance/rhythmic top 40
103.9 FOX 103-9-mainstream rock
104.7 WNOK-top 40
106.7 B106-AC

And speaking of C-103.......

This was taken from Chuck Dunaway (yes, THAT Chuck Dunaway of WABC, KLIF, and several other big Top 40 stations from the 60's and 70's). He was involved with the launch of C-103 in early 1986.and this is an account of his experience. I wasn't able to find it currently on his site at www.chuckdunaway.com, but thanks to www.archive.org, I was able to find it again:

http://web.archive.org/web/20040401192813/http://chuckdunaway.com/

EDIT: Sorry, wasn't able to link it directly, but can be access from this page by clicking on the last link on the left. It is in Episode #49.

And if you keep reading, you'll find a chapter about how he and his partners started Fox 102.

Re: And speaking of C-103.......

Hi Robyn,

I wasn't aware Chuck had anything to do with C-103 and Power. I know it used to be an urban station, WDPN, which switched to Churban under Ralph Wimmer, the PD and Dale McCaskill, the GM. I worked afternoons for Ralph when he(aka Big Tom Winston) did mornings, JJ Jaxon did middays and Jay Michaels and JJ Jeffries did nights. That was in 1988, I think. After that, Price Communications and Buddy Barton bought C-103, brought Sean Phillips in and changed to Power 103.

I had no idea at all Chuck had been involved with C-103. Learn something every day.

Re: And speaking of C-103.......

WOW Robyn that was an interesting read... I remember the first few months of C and that was one hot sounding station... The thing I remember the most about C was a lot of the great mixes that were on there... Little did I know as a teenager another nice change of pace in Columbia radio would take place with the launch of Yes 97... I also seem to remember The Big DM leaning very CHRish about that time with Madonna, Falco and a host of other non urban artist in heavy rotation at that time... CC

Ah, yes! Thanks CC for that memory. I've ran across C-103 a few days after the format/name change and I was hooked. Interestingly enough, I was at Oldies 103 one night with a friend of mine who was working there and ran across the Mark Driscoll sweeper reels that were used at the start of C-103. Mark was working as the PD of WAPE-FM/Jacksonville and had cut the sweepers dry. Wish I'd had made a dub of them as well as the John Young-voiced Power 103 sweepers that were there. Oh well we have the memories.

The Big DM had kept a lot of the non-urban artist in rotation as late as 1991 (I remember them playing Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch's "Good Vibrations).

Take care,
