CHWO Experimenting w/iboc?

I got home shortly after 1:am decided to check how the "end of the world" was progressing answer; only WOR has iboc on.

However CHWO (740) was strong and all of a sudden the Acurian's display showed
"U*F*" -and the "hd" symbol was on. There was no digital but this is what happens when the signal is just strong enough to get preliminary data through.

Was this an anomaly or is this station testing?

I'm inclined to say that CHWO did not have HD on tonight. I did hear HD hash on 750, but CKAC 730 was clear as a bell tonight. Not sure what keyed your radio, but i never got a hit on 740 tonight with a Sangean HDT-1 here upstate.

I did get several audio decodes on 1210 WPHT (lasting 10-12 seconds at most), and a brief one from WTAM 1100 but that's it.

Industry Canada has nixed domestic IBOC "for now." Allowing Canadian stations to operate HD would undercut Canada's political stance as it prepares to complain about US HD-AM interference, which is widely interpreted north of the border as being in violation of NARBA. Remember that 90% of Canada's population lives within 70 miles of the US border, mostly in the AM-congested Northeast, and the people in the northern interior of their country rely heavily on distant AM signals for radio service.

Thus it is highly unlikely you'll be seeing/hearing Canadian stations tinkering with HD for the forseeable future.

Mexico has expressed similar concerns. The international implications from adjacent-channel interference are likely to be considerable - stay tuned! (But, if you're listening IBOC, detune by at least one channel!)
