CIDR Performance

I've not listened to The River much. Can someone local speculate on why this station performs so poorly? Signal? Canadian content? What?

I think the CanCon regulations hurt this station wayyy more than they do 89x (which I honestly think helps them), as artists like Theory Of Dead Man, Default, etc. have no place on a AAA format. Second, they rely too heavily on an overly conservative playlist and they end up only playing tracks you can hear on 4-5 other stations in the market.
The signal is not a problem, as I believe only 89x and 95-5 have better, but I wonder how Bell is keeping a station with this low of ratings on such a powerful signal.

*Too many "experts" tinkering with the music, instead of allowing the station to evolve. And by the way, there's plenty of decent
CanCon that would sound better than the mediocre bands mentioned above...

*Very weak, bland sounding, air personalities.

*A challenged signal (in some areas) that makes tolerating items #1 & #2 not worthwhile for many.

I feel that 93.9 FM CIDR should flip to a Canadian Top 40 Radio Format.

No. Detroit contains the larger population/ad dollars, which is why CIDR targets Detroit. Detroit has enough Top 40 formats.

Not sure I agree that CIDR 'targets' Detroit. They do some advertising here, but have much higher ratings in Windsor and seem to be more focused on performance there rather than across the river.

I love listening to 93.9. I think what would serve that station best is to kinda play more music that they played when they first came along. The retro lunch is a tease at what the station could and should be. but in regards to newer stuff, they play too much Adele, Train, and the like, and they fall in line with some of the other stations in what they play(excluding rap). but they do have their moments where they play new stuff and it it's good, and not overplayed by other detroit stations. example: Graffiti6-Free.

Graffiti 6 and Alpha Rev have been the only things I have downloaded after hearing on this station that I haven't already heard played to death in several other Detroit stations. I like 93.9, but I wish they weren't so conservative with their sound (Look at K-FOG or even Ann Arbor's 107one to see AAA stations done very well.

It really disappoints me how boring this station can be considering their owner has a VERY WELL executed station in 89x.

The reason that CIDR performs so poorly is because it is a Canadian radio station, and usually Canadian radio stations don't perform well in the United Staters. This is because the Canadian stations usually count only listeners in Canada, not the United States.

I have heard though, that CKLW in the 60s and 70s was one of the most popular stations in Detroit, even though it was a Canadian station. There can be exceptions to the rule.

Well said, chrocket. umfan said it in his post, and I think he's right. their ratings are higher in Windsor, which is more important to them, and they take what they can here.
