"Cinderella" by Firefall

Of course, anybody who hates the taking of God's name in vain should embrace "Dammit Isn't God's Last Name". It is, after all, an anti-g.d. song, making the claim that that term should never be used.

The problem is that those who are the most outspoken "nannies" who want to purge the universe of things that offend them are seldom driven by reasonableness or logic.

I remember a station somewhere in Virginia or east Tennessee (can't really remember exactly where because we were on vacation at the time) that literally edited the "hell" out of "Every Which Way But Loose" by Eddie Rabbitt. The line "why the hell am I still here" was censored into "why the (silence) am I still here." This was back in 1979 when I was in high school, and it was an AM station, because that was all that we had in the car at the time. Only station that I ever heard that did that.

Years later, I had my own issue with censorship. I played the live version of "Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks over the old WDXN in Clarksville, TN. Little my knowledge, it has an extra verse which contains the line "kiss my ass." The PD came into the studio and informed me of that. I said no problem, I will just clip the audio when it gets to that line. So I listened closely, and when it got to that line, I just quickly clipped it. The PD told me that the GM is always listening, and sure enough, a day or two later, the PD told me that the GM commented to him about my clipping that line. I felt silly having to do that, but it was a small AM station, and undoubtedly had an older demographic.

Oh, you mean Rush, Sean, Glenn, the Savage Wiener, etc, etc, etc. (PS: Why are you posting on a music forum? Isn't trolling the talk forum enough for you?)

Another couple of examples of "censorship," and these both occurred at the old WHDM of McKenzie, TN, in the early '90s:

I remember playing the 45 of "Devil Went to GA" by the CDB, when the PD came in and warned me about the "SOB" reference near the end of the song. I pointed out to him that I was playing it from the 45 (which I had myself at one time), so I was playing the "clean" version. (Of course, the "son of a gun" version almost HAD to be played while it was a hit, in order for it to gain acceptance, especially for daily, mass-appeal airplay. Afterwards, programmers had slightly more leeway.) I seem to recall that they also had the CDB's "Million Mile Reflections" album (which contained the uncensored version of the song) on their shelf, but again, I played it from the single, not the album.

I also had a more frustrating experience with "wordy derds," also at WHDM. Management of this station was notoriously cheap, so they wanted me to play an album side over the air while I went into the production room to cut spots, most of which were next-day starts. Only problem was that some of these albums contained obscenities that I did not know about. The PD bitched about one of them, and asked me to pull it for him, which I did. On another occasion, I played another album side which apparently also contained obscenities. This time, the PD came to the studio and bitched me out about it. I pulled the album, showed it to him, he took a look at it, and PUT IT BACK ON THE SHELF, apparently to trick the next jock who tried to play it! He didn't even write any comments on it not to play it, or anything like that. Never mind that this wasn't the first, or even second, time that I had ever played that particular album side, and had never gotten any negative feedback about doing so, previously. The PD's comments were that I should listen to any album side before playing it on air. My counter-comment was that he was the PD, and that it was HIS job to flag, or outright remove, anything that was objectionable for airplay. It was ludicrous to suggest that I should listen, either in cue or audition, to an entire album side before playing it, especially when I was under a deadline to cut spots, and even then, there was the possibility of missing an expletive or two. But I had the last laugh. After he left, I removed that album from the studio, and put it in a closet in the back of the station where some other records were also in storage. What I should have done was taken a few more steps, and flung it in the dumpster behind the station. Not long after that, I got a job at another station, and was out of there!

Needless to say, this was at the WHDM of the early '90s. The station was off the air for a couple of years in the mid-'90s, and returned in the late '90s under new ownership and management. The station has probably had at least one additional ownership/management change since then, and the current station bears no resemblance to the WHDM of the early '90s, the one that I worked for.

I thought "Cinderella" sucked in general, but i seem to remember an edit that said "you Damn girl", not GD girl.

You are correct, and I am remiss in not having posted this, though I did exchange PM's with firepoint525 on the topic. That was indeed the edit/remix that was used on both the DJ and "store" 45rpm versions. Went to the local used-vinyl shop a couple weeks ago, bought one and verified same. I never cared much for the song either, but it got a lot of airplay around here when it was new.

I worked, for a short time, for Bud Paxson. No songs with drug references or the standard curse words and phrases. There went about 100 songs from the classic rock library.

All Pat Boone, all the time... :)
I would have to call his latest Safe Step Walk-In tub commercial nothing less than an embarrassment to him. He fancies himself a singer, yet his singing of their jingle line while he soaks in that tub is no better than what I could sing! He is as much talking that line, as singing it.

Back to topic, I heard "Cinderella" again over Hippie Radio this weekend. This time, they had taken "God" out of it, and quite cleanly, I might add. ("...I said damn girl....") One of the cleanest such cuts that I had ever heard. I don't know if they got complaints about the previous airing (mentioned by me earlier in this thread) or if they had planned to make that cut all along.
