Cindy Fitzgibbon Named WCVB Chief Meteorologist

Hearst Television’s WCVB Boston has promoted Cindy Fitzgibbon to chief meteorologist of the ABC affiliate. The station also upped meteorologist Mike Wankum.

Fitzgibbon will lead WCVB Channel 5’s team of meteorologists and oversee the station’s weather coverage. As chief meteorologist, she will continue as weather anchor for the weekday EyeOpener and Midday newscasts (4:30-7 a.m. and noon, respectively). In addition, she will be the principal meteorologist for WCVB’s Forecasting Our Future special ongoing coverage. The initiative was launched earlier this year by WCVB parent company Hearst Television to address issues Americans face in navigating changing weather patterns and their impact on local communities and economies.

Mike Wankum becomes the weeknight guy for all weeknight newscasts: 4pm, 5pm, 6pm, 7pm, 10pm (MeTV), and 11pm. Kinda surprised as he was the Chief Met when he was at Channel 56.

Things will change again (temporarily) in a few months as Kelly Ann is pregnant.

Works out nicely. Cindy gets a promotion, and Wankum gets the plum weeknight slots, where he will fit like a glove as Harvey’s replacement on those newscasts.

Last week, Cindy was on air Monday morning, but on Tuesday morning, Kelly Ann Cicalese was inexplicably working the weekday EyeOpener shift. Almost every morning since, Kelly Ann has been on air both on weekdays and her usual Saturday and Sunday morning shifts.

I hope nothing horrible happened to Cindy. It seems weird that she would disappear after being named the stations chief meteorologist.

They don’t seem to have settled into a groove for any of their slots. It’s like roulette. Some weeknights you get Wankum, sometimes you get AJ. Kelly Ann has been popping up on both weekends and weekdays. And then there’s the new guy, Michael Page.
