Cinncinnati talents heading to WGN?

Well, Wally Phillips and Frazier Thomas came from Cincy. Under different circumstances of course. And left a much better legacy.

McConnell's officially GONE from WLW down this way (announced around 3-3:30 PM Chicago time Monday), and this very site (Radio-info) now confirms that Tribune announced he would debut up there for WGN-AM on 8/9, timeslot still TBA. That was handed down late Monday night.

On a related note, do either McConnell or Cunningham's syndicated shows get clearance in Chicago? I'm looking to fill in those holes to see if they might potentially lose those. It seems as though Cunningham already lost his Chicago clearance at WLS-AM 890... but did McConnell ever/does he still have a clearance there?

Almost all of the legacy "ABC Radio" stations in Citadel's craw dropped Bill Cunningham for their sobering (or so-boring, you make the call!) John Batchelor. The one exception I know of is WJR, which still has Willie on.

Also, per the page on Premiere Radio's website ( http://premiereradio.com/shows/view/The_Weekend_Talk_Show.html ) - McConnell is still the host of "The Weekend." But on WLW's program schedule last weekend, Scott Sloan was filling in last weekend. (Doesn't show it right now as of Tuesday.)

I would be surprised if McConnell didn't get the 9a-1p slot. But where would Willie fit? Especially if he got the 7p-9p slot - following him up with Milt Rosenberg... that would be somewhat jarring.

Not familiar with McConnell or Cunningham, but I gotta hand it to WGN. Tribune continues to be committed to presenting a quality on-air product that is live, local and relevant to Chicago. :)

You obviously haven't been reading the blogs--it seems like most Chicagoans want to string Michaels and Pig Virus by their private parts for the decisions they've made at 'GN in the last year.

Nice movie reference.

Does Cunningham still practice law in Cincy? I do not see him moving to Illinois for a radio gig (iffy, at best) giving up his
lucrative law practice (sure thing).

I think he only practices law on an EXTREMELY part time basis, if at all.

Besides, you can do a radio show from anywhere now. He could easily go to Chicago a couple of days a week to tape the TV show and do his radio show from whatever city he's in on that day.

Cunningham's wife is an appeals court judge in Cincinnati. It runs in the family, I guess...

Gotta give Michaels and Metheny credit. They know how to get folks to talk about their station(s). Those who want the Cinncinnati addition will be pleased that they got one of the guys. Those who don't want the Cinncinnat addition will be pleased that they only have to take one of the guys. Meantime, tongues wag and Michaels and Metheny grin all the way the bank. Gotta love 'em. ;D

Overheard from Metheny during a closed-door meeting:

"Let me take care of the McConnell show. I'll ride herd on that SOB, I'll mold him into another Mancow Muller."

(Okay, that did not happen - but "Private Parts" was on HBO the other night, so I thought I'd write what I was thinking at the moment... ;D )

IMHO, Metheny is a brilliant programmer. Unfortunately he keeps tripping over his ego and/or his political agenda which has generally been his eventual undoing wherever he's been.

It seems that, generally, he's been able to overcome his personal extreme left wing agenda for the good of the station, except when he dropped Glenn Beck for Jerry Springer in Cleveland. However, part of that decision may have gone higher as it might at WGN, as I suspect Randy Michaels and PV share more in common than just radio genius.

Do you want to expand on that thought for the rest of us?
