Citadel Bankruptcy: Any Effect On KDF Or GFX?

I seem to recall Vandy paying Citadel Nashville a lot of money to air games on the Zone. That money will now go over to 97.1.That along with bankruptcy can't be good.

Vandy isn't paying Citadel... If Vandy had to pay stations to air their games, they'd just use WRVU.

All the colleges pay for the games to be broadcast. Cumulus isn't airing Vanderbilt for free any more than Citadel did when they had Vanderbilt or when the Zone broadcasts the games from Belmont. TSU does the same with that AM station on 1470.

It's really too bad that Vandy doesn't just use WRVU. Paying Cumulus or Citadel is a real waste of the school's (and the student's tuition fees) money.

All colleges do NOT pay to be carried. Georgia is getting paid, and I am confident most big time programs are too. I am talking football and basketball.

another monkey in the wrench re: WRVU airing VU games...
WRVU can't air spots...and would have to cover with PSAs, etc.
try to listen to WMOT during a MTSU football broadcast.
painful. very painful.

Don't slam the PSA's too much...I'd rather hear them than some rich stoner's bad show promo on RVU!

can't the collage station get around the "NO SPOTS" deal by having the games underwritten ? same thing applied to vol state as i recall when they carried the Gallatin football games back in the eighties..kept hearing "this game under written by so and so.."..

Romer knows more about this than I......but I feel very comfortable saying U-T doesn't pay WLAC or Clear Channel to carry their games....unless you call showing up for Big Orange day paying. Just the opposit from what I picked up around there.

I always heard this was the main reason Vandy stayed in the SEC... and yes, I have always heard it's
a pool spread around the Conference. So, I wonder if these stations just get a big check to the home
office without much local knowledge of how much they receive and then the ad agencies and local
sales team just sell the spots. Win ~ win?

Yes Vandy gave Citadel a bunch of money to air the games and call in show on the Zone. Several years ago UT wanted an FM station in Nashville to air games and WGFX almost got them but CC offered 105.9 along with WLAC for football. People didn't understand that we HAD to air the Monday night call in show no matter what even if the Preds had a game. Vandy was #1 on The Zone then Preds and PRN and Belmont and Grizzles.
Now Vandy is gone and the Titans will air on the Zone, other than the loss of Vandy money thats a great move.
I will say this. It's very hard to be "The Flagship" station for so many teams. Contracts are drawn up with several promos promoting each game and show. Must promote on air and on the station web site. It was very hard to make sure all of the "extra" things got on the air let alone the games. We got them all on but it is a huge puzzle.

Yeah, now, no conflict when the Titans have Monday Night Football, great!

Somebody should start a thread about how many stations Gallatin football has been on...this is new info for me. If the games were there, I bet they weren't on there for long...much like any Pioneer basketball or baseball games on the air since I graduated, seeing as though I was the last regular "voice of the Pioneers".

the games were on vol state for about five years..up until WHIN went to low power nightime. seth sparkman is affliated with vol state in some sort of teaching capacity and one of the co owners of WHIN..so it was an in house deal so to speak. when whin bought 104.5, in 1971..we did the gallatin football and basketball games live over 50k watts..one month of football paid for one month of all expenses at that time for the fm..we would get around 800.00 per night for gallatin footbal..including a pre game show, 1st half, halftime show, 2nd half, post game show..as well as a coaches show prior to the game each week..we turned sponsors down because we just could not get any more spots in..6 to midnight was my shift then..pretty good times..bring a large pizza, and a 12 pack and enjoy the game..people always dropping by on top of that mountain..someday the real story can be told.. ;D

A long time Nashville radio loved to tell the story about going to Gallatin several years ago to sell U-T football and nearly dropped his tobacco when he found he was selling the Big Orange for LESS than sponsers up here could buy Gallatin football on WHIN

Vandy would probably have to pay to use WRVU, too. Odd as it may sound, the university doesn't own the station - instead it is operated by a separate non-profit organization that oversees student media at Vanderbilt.
