Citadel Death clock and fire sale

lalumia said:
people aren't tuning to AM for their music cos IT ISN"T BEING OFFERED ON AM- not yet, anyway; a re born True Oldie WABC would be a swift, instant triumph, ;spare me the 'radio wisdom' hand book, that's what got everyone into the mess they're in IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!...lol...

Sorry, but there's a reason why you don't hear music on AM. It *was* offered on AM, until those listeners abandoned those stations and went to FM. And that was before satellite radio, mp3s and the internet. Sorry, AM music will be a very, very tough sale, unless you want your demos to be 65 and over, like WHLI...seemingly strong ratings but minimal billing due to the very old demos.

Here is an example.

In the NY market, hence this board being called NEW YORK. Hell would freeze over and the station you listed would be number one in the nation before the AM dial in NY would get any listeners, or even get considered for a music station for adults. The FM dial has enough trouble as it is. Most car stereos in cars can't even pick up AM well in parts of NYC area due to so much EMF. Forget WABC, forget music and a successful station on AM. It isn't going to happen and not a single station group ever, would think about it. Nice fantasy. You want WABC, go to that WABC website that plays old air checks or wait till labor day or whatever day that is when they play old WABC on AM

- Lincoln Financial stops their sale because they don't like the bids. Too low for them...

They just sold WBT and 107.9 Link FM in Charlotte to Greater Media.

Mr. Bill said:
- Citadel lets go talent all over the company, catching many by suprise and saying their revenue is off.

They just did a slash-and-burn on Leap Day. Chicago: Entire news dept. at WLS. Washington DC: Entire airstaff of WJZW (format flip). Atlanta: Entire airstaff of WYAY (format flip coming) and half the airstaff of WKHX.

Mr. Bill said:
- CBS just unloaded stations, could layoffs be next?

3 PDs, 2 marketing directors and 1 chief engineer let go in NYC last month.

Mr. Bill said:
- Does Cox want to get involved in NYC? With their recent purchase in Athens, GA, they are looking for values, not market share and big sticks (unless it's a fire sale they can turn into a revenue moneymaker)

Athens rimshots Atlanta. Cox already owns 3 FMs on Long Island, so 1-2 more in NYC would put them over the ownership cap.

Cox Ownership

How can Cox go over the ownership cap when CBS owns 6 and Clear Channel owns 7 radio stations.

CBS Radio:
WXRK FM, WCBS FM, WWFS FM, WCBS AM, WFAN, WINS

Clear Channel
WAXQ, WHTZ, WWPR, WKTU, WLTW, WALK FM, WALK AM

Don't tell me that both companies are not over the ownership cap.

Do you understand how the ownership "cap" works?

Note that CC is selling off WALK AM/FM as part of a DOJ order per their attempt to go private.

I think what fans of the old WABC "Musicradio" format forget is that there's a big difference between a "feature" program and a format.

You can take an A/C station, do 5 hours of 70's disco on Saturday night and, in most markets, pull a respectible, if not decent audience if it's done right. Try to do 70's disco as a format? A disaster in the making. Same with the notion of "bringing back" the "legendary" WABC on a full-time basis.

Yes, AM attracts older listeners...and that's still the problem. Advertisers use means other than radio to get their message out to the 55 plus demographic. Even if you did go "oldies" on WABC...even if you pulled a respectable share, even if you bettered the current 12 plus of the talk station...you still would have little in the way of advertisers, because most of the audience would be in the 55-64 demo. And, until and unless this advertiser-driven attitude ever changes, the idea will be a "non-starter" to any company with half a brain of business sense.

Sorry...but that's how it is. And, the WSM-AM analogy doesn't fly...'cause, while WSM has loyalty with many older fans in Nashville, the station is just barely in the range of "being a player" in the market...about a 3 share last time I looked in a market where it takes a 6 to 8 or better to "win" the market.

The latest casualty is in San Francisco: Melanie Morgan, morning hostess at right-wing talker KSFO.

After a month of working as senior VP and acting chief financial officer, Randy Taylor has officially been promoted to CFO of Citadel Broadcasting.

“I am looking forward to my expanded role and in continuing to contribute to Citadel, which I have been part of for many years,” said Taylor, who will remain based at the group’s Las Vegas operations. "I have approved and cut more severance checks this week than a teller at a Mexican bank".

Taylor was named acting CFO on Jan. 22 to replace Robert Freedline, who left the post after 20 months as Citadel’s CFO effective Jan. 31 “to pursue other career opportunities,” the company said at the time. (which means he didn't need a floodlight to read the handwriting on the wall).

"Randy has dedicated himself to serving the company for more than seven years," Citadel chairman/CEO Farid Suleman said in January. "His knowledge and experience within the company and in the industry and his unrelenting drive for excellence will be invaluable in taking the company to the next level."

That's the problem with big business. The big guys don't want to part with a salary cut or their private jet, so they fire people who did nothing wrong in their jobs.....

I just hope they don't ditch Scott and Todd or else my PLJ listening days are over :). I still can't believe Imus survived. He couldn't even string two sentences together for a live commercial when I heard him for the first time last week. Is he always like that? News and politics are not my bag, so I don't listen to AM
