Citadel Employees

I guess the Citadel / Cumulus deal is about to happen. Yesterday I heard the legal announcement on 106.7. This has to be unsettling for the employees. First having to transition form a successful ABC / Disney to a bankrupt Citadel, Now here comes Storm Cloud. It was kind of interesting on 106.7 right after the legal notice; the next song was “Hungry Like a Wolf” then “Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again”. Is there a message in the music?

I was lucky and only worked at one station that changed hands when I was there. I can honestly they were really fair. I was asked to stay on during the “legal” notice period. Everybody except salespeople, only one person in the news department (of three) and the engineer were out within 6 months. They let us use the production room evenings for air checks, paid postage for me to mail the air checks, continued health insurance of 3 months, and paid out the whole year’s vacation time in February. Will the Citadel people get this?

I hope not.
Of course an employer / owner of a business can do what ever is legal to their employees. That is the American way.

Well working for ABC Radio was basically like working for one of the last few great radio companies left, like susquehanna was. As well as working for one the best companies in the World, being Disney.

Going from ABC Radio to working for Citadel, was like going to go work for a well oiled machine, to working for a Pimp that doesn't use any oil at all when he does you know what. A major difference in companies, when that went down. We're taking away your benefits, your 401K, and we know you have been faithful and loyal to us for 10 years, but that also means you make too much money, so we'll also take this and that as well, if we decide to keep you. Citadel needed millions of dollars to pay their CEO's bonuses to, to reward them for driving the company into BK.

Now that they they already work for a pimp, they are just going to a different one, so it won't be as much of a culture shock, and they won't walk as funny afterwards.

The major difference now, is that the Kicks Country staff will now be forced to do what Cumulus's other Country stations do in all the other markets. Because if it works in such a place here and there, it must work just as well in Atlanta.

Rock100.5 was also airing a legal announcement which, if I could decipher the actual message from the LONG laundry list of names (half of which had surnames of "Dickey"), trusts, LPs, LLCs, etc. that all owned each other, had to do with the dissolution of Cumulus Media Partners and the absorption of CMP and Susquehanna Radio into Cumulus Media, Inc. The announcement also mentioned Citadel (or, rather, what sounded like Citadel's bankruptcy trust), which shouldn't affect Q100 or Rock 100.5, unless they are using a single legal announcement for all four stations.

ABC,decided they wanted out of the radio bussiness,I wish they hadn't sold to Citadel,we might still have Eagle 106.7.and Rhubarb Jones would have been able to decide when he was ready to go.

If Cumulus was smart they would leave 101.5 alone for a while. Outside of Dallas Fort Worth's KPLX, it will be their "biggest" Country station. If I was responsible for P & L at Cumulus, I would not make any big changes to any of the Citadel "cash cow" stations. 106.7 is headed in the correct direction (messing with Cox's non urban music stations) too. Atlanta is not a big enough sports town to really justify putting WCNN's sports on 106.7. If 100.5 's Regular Guys doesn't make the required $$$ (which I am pertty sure they do) put WCNN on 100.5.

There's nothing that says you couldn't simulcast 680 outside of AM drive, giving people a choice of morning shows (Rude on 680 and TRG on 100.5).

Now here's a question. How much audience overlap is there between 106.7 and 100.5? Both stations primarily play music from the same time period, with 106.7 playing 70s/80s Top 40 and 100.5 playing 70s/80s AOR. They compete heavily with a pair of Cox stations in B98.5 and River, respectively.

What would be the best way to "tweak" these two stations to draw new listeners from Cox (or elsewhere, but I am not sure who that would be except maybe Dave or Project on occasion) but not from each other?

They will blow up all formats and program nothing but polka music 24/7. Either that or all Gregorian chants all the time...Music to drone by, we're 101.5! ;D
